The role of a Customs and Border Protection Officer involves ensuring the security and integrity of the country's borders, enforcing laws and regulations, and facilitating legitimate trade and travel.

This position requires strong analytical skills, effective communication, and decision-making abilities to identify potential threats and make informed decisions.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be eligible for this role, applicants must possess :

  • A minimum of one year of specialized experience in law enforcement or a related field
  • A master's degree or higher from an accredited institution (or equivalent)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with varying priorities

    In addition to the above qualifications, applicants must also meet the following requirements :

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Be referred before the age of 40 (with some exceptions)
  • Be eligible for veterans' preference (if applicable)
  • Formal Training

    Newly appointed Customs and Border Protection Officers will undergo formal training, which includes a two-week orientation and 101-day academy at FLETC in Glynco, GA. Spanish training may be required for certain locations.
