JOB SUMMARY

The clinical instructor reviews and understands course objectives and applies teaching techniques to best achieve course and program objectives. The clinical instructor supervises care provided by a group of students during their clinical experience. This includes coordinating with the clinical site to make student patient assignments, orienting students to the clinical area, demonstrating proper procedures, leading discussions on clinical objectives, and discussing with students concerns related to the clinical experience. This position collaborates with didactic and clinical faculty members as needed to ensure clinical objectives are met.

DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties :

Review and understand the course objectives, both classroom and clinical, and apply the teaching techniques to best achieve course and program objectives.

Model effective oral and written communication that engages the students, provides clarity, and improves student learning.

Discuss with students their concerns and / or problems directly or indirectly related to learning experience.

Assist the student to develop an understanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the health care profession.

Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing clinical sites.

Participate in meetings, both formally and informally with didactic and clinical faculty members.

Provide clinical, classroom, and clinical simulation lab instruction when needed.

Supervise care provided by a group of students (usually 6 to 10 students in a group) while they complete their clinical rotation in your area of specialty.

Coordinate with clinicians at the clinical site to make student patient assignments.

Orient students to the clinical area and demonstrate proper procedures.

Ensure faculty and student adherence to the care and conduct policies and guidelines of the clinical setting during clinical instruction.

Lead discussions and elicit information from students which demonstrate that students are learning and accomplishing the clinical objectives.

Teach students how to perform duties in the clinical site and answer their questions.

Maintain clinical standards and course expectations throughout each course or term.

Evaluate and grade student performance.

Maintain the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice.

Communicate with Lab, Course or Program Coordinator as necessary to resolve issues or concerns in clinical areas.

Work effectively as part of the overall faculty team demonstrating positive interpersonal relations, collaborating with other faculty members to meet student needs, participating in faculty meetings and nursing program committees, and responding to requests from management.

Participate in ongoing program evaluation activities as needed.

Maintain faculty expectations as required by the College and the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION / LICENSE / CERTIFICATIONS / OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirement :

Master’s degree in nursing required.

Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional nursing experience within the last 5 years within one of the listed disciplines :

• Behavioral Medicine
• Materinal Child Health
• Medical / Surgical

Maintains active RN license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and any other states as applicable.

Preferred qualifications :

2 years of teaching experience

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This position is in a shared office space / Medical Center setting

Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.

Frequently exposed to blood and / or body fluids and infection.

Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.

Frequent stress associated with management of conflict situations, deadlines, change, and regulatory changes.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) while preparing education or presenting to a group.

Frequently required to walk and move about throughout the department and Medical Center.

Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.

Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments / devices

Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.

Constantly required to lift and / or move items up to 10 pounds.

Frequently required to lift and / or move items up to 25 pounds.

Occasionally required to lift and / or move items up to 50 pounds.

Constantly required to communicate with team members or patients requiring talking and hearing

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
