Job Description
Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) is a special place that occupies a unique space within the history of the state of Texas. PVAMU is the second-oldest public institution of higher education in Texas. PVAMU is a historically Black college / university (HBCU) that, since its inception in 1876, has opened its doors to any and every person seeking a first-class, four-year university. The University Police Department (UPD) is tasked with keeping PVAMU a safe place to live, learn, collaborate, and innovate. UPD supports all PVAMU campuses and assets, including PVAMU campuses in the Texas Medical Center and Northwest Center. UPD is a member of the Texas A&M University System and strives to attract high-performing faculty and staff.
Currently, UPD seeks to establish a pool of qualified applicants for potential future employment in Police Officer (In Training, I, II, III, or IV) positions. Review of applications will be ongoing, and candidates will be contacted when positions become available.
Responsibilities
- Provide law enforcement duties for the campus community and respond to emergencies and calls for assistance. Interact with the public in day-to-day contacts, provide escorts in safety and emergency situations, and assist state, county, and city law enforcement as requested.
- Patrol PVAMU properties in Waller County by bicycle or foot under general supervision of a police sergeant or lieutenant. Investigate illegal and suspicious activities, persons, and establishments; take reports and perform preliminary investigations; enforce all criminal laws and Texas Penal Code violations.
- Coordinate training to ensure compliance with state TCOLE requirements. Serve as Victim Assistance Coordinator for the department.
- Prevent crime, suppress disturbances, issue citations, testify in Justice of the Peace Court, County / District Courts, and student judicial hearings; guard and transport prisoners. Report all PVAMU violations, rules, and regulations; assist the public as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications by Position Level
Police Officer in Training : High School Diploma or GED; graduated from Police Academy; two years of full-time employment; Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic licensure; valid driver's license.Police Officer I : High School Diploma or GED; one year of related law enforcement experience; pay : $54,766.60 ($26.33 / hour).Police Officer II : High School Diploma or GED; one year of experience as a licensed Police Officer; TCOLE Basic licensure; valid driver's license; must have Texas Class C license or ability to obtain within 30 days.Police Officer III : High School diploma or GED and required college hours to meet TCOLE Intermediate Peace Officer certification; three years of experience as a licensed Police Officer; TCOLE Intermediate Peace Officer certification; Texas Class C license or ability to obtain within 30 days.Police Officer IV : High School diploma or GED and required college hours for Advanced Peace Officer certification; five years of licensed Police Officer experience (or six years with no college degree); TCOLE Advanced Peace Officer certification; Texas Class C license or ability to obtain within 30 days.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Certified as a Police Officer by TCOLE.State of Texas Class C vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.Texas Selective Service registration (mail-age 18–25 as required).Other Requirements
U.S. Citizenship, excellent physical health and stamina.Work beyond normal hours and weekends; successful completion of field training.Pass entrance exam, psychological evaluation, physical examination, and background investigation (including driving history, criminal background, and credit history).Preferred Qualifications
