Overview

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is seeking a Senior Paralegal to support KIND's delivery of legal services through case preparation, legal research, and related tasks in support of the legal strategy for the client. The Senior Paralegal could supervise Paralegals and other non-attorney staff as needed and oversee training and development of paralegal staff in collaboration with Staff Attorneys, Senior Attorneys, and Managing Attorneys. This is a remote position based from any location in the U.S.

Base pay range

$25.96 / hr - $32.36 / hr

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the overall programmatic function of the KIND office paralegal program
  • Onboards, trains, and supervises paralegals, including conducting initial and ongoing training; troubleshoots, reviews, and provides quality assurance of referrals, filings, and pleadings; provides daily support and coaching; conducts regular check-ins and performance evaluations; and ensures high-quality paralegal support to the legal team
  • Conducts legal research, completes immigration benefit forms, and drafts affidavits and motions for immigration and state court proceedings in consultation with attorneys
  • Maintains accurate and timely file management and data entry in the case management system
  • Assists in clients' hearing and adjudicatory interview preparation in coordination with attorneys
  • Supervises undergraduate interns and assists with training of legal interns as needed
  • Supports professional development of paralegals and staff in collaboration with attorneys and KIND's National Training and Technical Assistance Team
  • Tracks and ensures referral and intake metrics under grants and contracts in consultation with attorneys
  • Supervises paralegals in intake interviews, phone screenings, intake memos, and presenting cases to attorneys; conducts intakes and screenings as needed
  • Assists with pro bono training, including non-attorney team members, through training materials and topic-specific trainings
  • Assesses cases for social service needs and assists with social services referrals; liaises with Social Services Coordinators to meet programmatic goals
  • For direct representation cases, performs functions of an accredited representative, including client interviews; appears before immigration agencies; drafts and files applications for benefits; maintains current case information and wellbeing updates; ensures regular client check-ins in coordination with attorneys
  • For pro bono cases, assists in case audits and ensures timely updates in the case management system; supports targeted pro bono activities with resources and training materials

Qualifications and requirements

  • Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience; or high school diploma with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Fluent in English and Spanish for direct communication with children and caregivers
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working with children, at-risk youth, immigrants or refugee populations, or trauma-informed settings
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in humanitarian-based immigration work, including intakes and legal applications
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working independently on projects or programs
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with detained populations or youth in diverse settings
  • Minimum of 1 year experience presenting legal information to immigrant audiences
  • Proven ability to supervise or coach others on programs or projects
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to collaborate and multi-task in a dynamic environment; prioritize tasks and delegate when appropriate
