Firefighter / EMT
The City of Glenn Heights is seeking applicants for a Firefighter / EMT - (Paramedic Preferred) position. Perfectly positioned along IH-35 East, Glenn Heights is a hospitable, business friendly, rapidly growing community divided between Dallas and Ellis counties. The City has a total area of 7.2 sq. miles (18.8 km sq.) with more than 50% of the city's developable land is located along major arterial intersections that are available for retail and office development. The Firefighter is responsible for responding to fire alarms, emergency medical calls and other emergency calls to protect life and property.

Essential Job Duties / Responsibilities :
Participates in fire training, fire prevention, public education and station and equipment maintenance activities. Responds to alarms involving fire, all types of accidents, gas leaks, flooded structures, hazardous substances; performs lifesaving and rescue work; places fire hoses, sets ladders, operates fire streams, ventilates and enters burning structures to extinguish fires and performs rescue services. Performs salvage and overhaul operations during and after fires to remove hazards and prevent water damage; inspects and performs maintenance on hydrants; performs decontamination procedures in compliance with regulations. Operates a paramedic vehicle safely; treats and transports patients in accordance with Glenn Heights Emergency Medical Services protocol and department policy. Leads a paramedic unit in response to medical emergencies and provides and / or assists with first aid or definitive care and treatment in the field to persons in life threatening medical situations, under radio direction of a mobile intensive care unit physician or nurse. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as controlled drug inventory, equipment and station logs, and EMS reports; operates pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators and pumps. Washes, polishes, and performs preventive maintenance on fire apparatus and equipment; cleans and maintains fire station and grounds; updates station bulletin boards and maps as requested. Presents programs and participates in the department's public relations programs as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Comprehensive abilities in problem solving, conflict management and customer relations techniques. Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, fellow employees, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business and community groups. Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information and to comply with all record retention laws. Proficient skills to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain proficiency and knowledge of current and upcoming or new regulations / legislation within areas of responsibility. Proficient understanding of all City safety rules and operating procedures. Proficient skills to extinguish fires, work as a member of a fire and paramedic team using modern techniques; EMS procedures; emergency incident management, specifically the Incident Command System (ICS); appropriate gear, tools and agents. Proficient skills to provide medical care according to department policies and medical protocols and to perform frequent lifting and moving of patients. Ability to have / maintain a clean criminal record excluding minor traffic violations. Ability to maintain mental and physical fitness and demonstrate 20 / 40 uncorrected vision, correctable to 20 / 20. Ability to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50 feet, often in dim light and distinguish between the colors of red, yellow and green.
Minimum Qualifications :
High School diploma or GED equivalent Must have a valid Department of State Health Services EMT or national registry (NREMT) license. Must have a valid State of Texas structural firefighter certificate from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
Licenses and Certifications :
Must obtain / retain a valid Department of State Health Services EMT or national registry (NREMT) license. Must obtain / keep a valid State of Texas intermediate structural firefighter certificate from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection Must obtain / keep a TCFP Certificate as an Inspector Basic
All applicants must attach a copy of their Texas Fire Commission certification along with their Texas Paramedic certification. Only qualified applicants will be contacted and scheduled for testing, which includes a written exam and physical agility testing.
Insurance :
Choice of three medical plans to include a High Deductible Health Plan and two PPO plan options. Employee Only coverage on the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) / Health Savings Account (HSA) Plan will be paid 100% by the City. Employee Only premiums are paid at 100% by the City. Dependent coverage is available at the expense of the employee. Coverage is offered at the expense of the employee. The City provides each employee with a life insurance policy of $20,000, and covers spouses for $5,000 and dependent children for $2,000. Additional coverage may be purchased at the expense of the employee. Employees may elect to be covered under various supplemental policies at their own expense. Employees are eligible to open a flexible spending account (also known as a reimbursement account), which allows for pre-tax payroll deductions for certain types of unreimbursed medical, and / or dependent care expenses.
Retirement :
Employees participate in a statewide retirement program at 6% mandatory contribution with the city match of 2 : 1. The program requires five (5) years to become vested, with 25 years retirement at any age. Employees may contribute up to the IRS limit into an optional deferred compensation plan.
Other Benefits :
All full-time employees accrue one workday per month, based on longevity. All full-time employees accrue one workday per month. Employees receive 9 paid holidays and two personal days per year. Fire employees receive 10 paid holidays and one personal day per year.
