About The Position

Job Title : RN Surgical Specialty

Profession : Registered Nurse

Specialty : Float Pool

Duration : 13 weeks

Shift : Days

Hours per Shift : 36.00

Experience : Minimum 1 year of experience, with step-down and med / surg experience required.

License : Current RN License issued by the state board of nursing or a current multistate compact RN license.

Certifications : Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association.

Must-Have : Travel experience, acute care surgical floor experience, and experience caring for patients with new drains, wounds, trachs, ostomies, NGT or DHT.

Description :

Under general supervision, provides nursing care in a hospital to a variety of patients with health problems ranging from simple to complex.

Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients.

Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments.

Notes all changes in physician orders on assigned patients.

Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments.

Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients.

Observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary.

Administers medication as prescribed.

Initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products.

Delivers patient care competently.

Interacts with family and patients in sharing care plans while in the hospital and at the time of discharge.

Informs patients and families of hospital procedures.

Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel.

Delegates tasks to support staff.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Nurses for this unit need medical-surgical experience as this floor has inpatients pre or post-surgical services.

Candidates will care for patients post-operatively and need experience taking care of patients with new drains, wounds, trachs, ostomies, NGT, or DHT.

Some of these patients will require step-down care as well.

Ratios are 5 or 6 : 1 for surgical patients and 3 or 4 : 1 for the step-down area.

Candidates will also care for new transplant patients or returning transplant patients.

They need close monitoring for reactions, rejection, and infection.

Required Skills & Experience :

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.

Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques.

Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to respond effectively to patients' cultural and language needs.

Some computer skills are necessary.
