GIRMC Summer Nurse Extern
GENERAL SUMMARY :
Performs delegated tasks, under the direct supervision of the RN Preceptor. Promotes continuity of care by communicating with interdisciplinary team and family as appropriate. Able to work with the age specific populations according to the setting.
Is not permitted to function independently for the primary duties listed below and is considered a technician under the supervision of the Registered Nurse preceptor.

5. Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Medication administration will be witnessed by licensed nursing preceptor.
6. Assists physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.

8. Manages a patient assignment with assigned nurse appropriately and safely.
9. Follows and accesses policies and procedures as this may be required for job tasks.
10. Utilizes critical thinking skills for complex situations that may arise with patients.

14. Communicates appropriately and clearly to Nurse Manager, co-workers and physicians.
15. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
16. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
17. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
18. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
19. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
2. Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
3. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.
4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
5. Ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
7. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.
9. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.
10. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
11. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.
12. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Senior level student in good standing of a nationally accredited nursing program. Must be within 12-18 months of graduation.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS :
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
