Head Custodian
The Head Custodian is a working custodial position who performs daily custodial duties and coordinates and assists with supervising all aspects of daily and periodic cleaning in and around the museum, office, and storage areas. This position requires working some nights that we're open and on weekends. Applicants must be available to work flexible hours and schedules to fulfill the needs of the organization. The Head Custodian reports to the Custodial Manager.
Essential Functions
- Perform specific daily custodial duties and substitute for custodial stations when necessary.
- Assign and train custodial staff on Exploratorium protocol for daily and periodic work.
- Operate, maintain, and repair cleaning equipment.
- Monitor assigned work areas regularly to ensure proper standards are maintained.
- Respond to emergency clean-up situations and reassign staff as needed to deal with same.
- Help to maintain effective working relationships with staff, public, and other occupants of the museum.
- Maintain and track cleaning supply inventory. Order and stock supplies.
- Coordinate with janitorial service contractors to ensure smooth transitions and consistent quality of service between in-house and contractor teams, particularly during handover of evening events.
- Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds, and to bend, kneel, stand, reach, climb a ladder, and move heavy objects using appropriate equipment.
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma with seven (7) years of custodial experience.Demonstrated ability to monitor and direct work of team members in a fast-paced environment.Good interpersonal / human relation skills; ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.Ability to operate, diagnose, and perform some repair of cleaning equipment.Understands MSDS, hazmat rules and regulations, and proper use of cleaning chemicals.Organizational / planning ability.Ability to communicate in ASL, Spanish, or Chinese a significant plus.Physical Requirement
