Primary Purpose

Testing and Commissioning engineers are a front-line field engineering force that commissions, maintains, and troubleshoots transmission and distribution level protection and control systems inside ComEd substations. System and equipment types include protective relays, SCADA, substation automation, power and control equipment, fiber-optic, power line carrier, and revenue metering. They perform field testing and commissioning activities for installation of new equipment, as well as troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance of existing equipment. Commissioning new equipment includes creating commissioning plans, writing livening procedures, creating and running test plans, and analyzing test results. They also troubleshoot and perform field investigations for malfunctioning power equipment and protective relaying misoperations, supporting corrective maintenance. Preventive maintenance on protection system components and SCADA is also performed. The role may require extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or energy delivery emergencies.

Primary Duties

Act as the technical authority in the field and provide leadership by directing and supporting substation maintenance and contractor crews. Interface with central engineering, work management, project management, operations, data maintenance, and substation maintenance to support daily activities. Support substation outage / work planning, maintain engineering drawings, relay / SCADA databases, and assist with NERC / CIP audit support. Contribute to maintenance programs and safety culture. Job Scope

Conduct corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, and project installation testing on power equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field and 0-3 years of technical experience, or an associate's degree and 2-5 years of experience, or 5-7 years of relevant experience if non-degreed or non-technical degree.
  • Successful completion of the TECH Test. (A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university exempts the TECH Test requirement.)
  • Knowledge of regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices related to maintenance, testing, installation or service for a specific discipline.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics and use basic test instruments.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel frequently to various substations or locations within the service territory.
  • Must be available to work shifts and respond to emergency situations (7 days per week / 24 hours per day).
  • Relevant experience may include military roles in power systems, project management, journey-level electrician or gas technician, field operations, or other utility experience; equivalent education / experience may apply.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Technical experience related to electrical power equipment.
