Overview
The Quality Engineer is a skilled professional who, with limited supervision from the Quality Assurance Manager, applies advanced principles of product and service quality evaluation and control. This role leverages a diverse body of knowledge and technologies to ensure excellence in processes and deliverables.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Quality Assurance Manager with development and operation of Quality Systems
- Review proposed contracts, products and processes to avoid or eliminate unnecessary quality difficulties
- Plan the quality measurements and controls on materials, processes, and product that provide adequate control of quality at minimum quality related costs
- Determine that manufacturing processes have sufficient capability to meet quality requirements
- Analyze quality information and feedback analyses and make recommendations for adjustments to product design, manufacturing processes, equipment, and the quality system
- Inspect optical components and hardware
- Provide leadership in the application of statistical methods to diagnose and correct improper quality practices, workmanship and process problems
- Carry out essential steps in establishing and maintaining the company quality system on behalf of the Quality Assurance Manager
Quality Planning and Execution
Recommends quality objectives and goals in line with company thrusts and initiativesCollaborates with Quality Management, Marketing, Engineering and Customers to establish specific quality requirements for products based on customer needsReviews proposed and new contracts and new designs for manufacturing quality abilityAble to create AS9100 FAI'sPlans quality measurements and controls to provide adequate control of quality at minimum costsEnsures QA has adequate metrology to support quality requirements of new processesDefines and communicates quality requirements to Suppliers through Purchasing documentsWorks with Manufacturing Engineering and Production to integrate quality measurement and control devices with production equipment for optimum automation and feedbackContinuous Improvement and Customer Service
Analyzes quality information and recommends improvements to increase product and process uniformity, reliability and quality characteristicsReviews product specifications and makes changes to meet or exceed customer requirementsMaintains awareness of new technologies for product metrology and evaluationEvaluates the effectiveness of the quality system and addresses customer complaints with corrective actionsConducts root cause analysis and leads corrective / preventive actions (CAPA)Performs FMEA as needed to reduce rejects and production problemsCoordinates government and customer inspections and quality system surveys where applicableRepresents the quality engineering group to customersResolves warranty issues in a timely mannerSupport to Quality Control, Sales, Engineering and Operations
Reviews prints and quotes for QA requirements as neededProvides technical assistance to other departmentsMaintains up-to-date documentation reflecting customer and internal changesProvides leadership in applying statistical methods to diagnose quality problemsInterprets quality requirements for inspection and supports production with quality decisionsEngages with suppliers to ensure timely supply of quality productsDevelops and implements quality training and orientation programsNonconforming Material Control
Chairs the Material Review Board and manages segregation of nonconforming materialProcesses Deviation Requests and coordinates with customers and programs to ensure acceptability before shipmentImplements Quality Improvement, supplier deviation requests and waiversInvestigates nonconforming materials and drives corrective actionsWorks with cross-functional teams for disposition and correction of root causesCodes NCMRs and analyzes trendsEducation & Experience
Minimum 7 years of experience in one or more branches of Quality AssuranceBS / MS in Quality Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, the Basic Sciences or equivalent degreeSkills
Strong inspection, writing and interpersonal communication skillsKnowledge of Quality Assurance, Engineering, and Statistical MethodsGood interpersonal skills and ability to work with customers and suppliersUnderstanding Mil-Specs, ANSI, ISO etc.Experience with interferometers, spectrophotometers, calipers, micrometers, CMMs, lasers and electronic test equipmentAmerican Society for Quality Certification as a Quality Engineer is a plusLead auditor experience is a plusWorking Conditions
