Senior Power Systems Commissioning Engineer

Join Torus, a leading sustainable energy company, to lead the commissioning, testing, and validation of large-scale energy storage systems. Your expertise in high-power systems, protection, and grid integration will drive factory and field commissioning, ensuring compliance with safety standards, utility interconnection requirements, and customer performance specifications.

This role requires regular travel to installation sites (estimated 50%).

Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning of 1–50 MW energy storage systems and protection relays by overseeing installation verification, energization, functional testing, and customer handover while developing and executing detailed test plans and safety protocols.
  • Interface with utilities, AHJs, and customers to ensure compliance with interconnection, grid codes, and safety standards, and provide technical guidance to field technicians, contractors, and junior engineers.
  • Document test results, punch lists, and as-built drawings and support continuous improvement by feeding lessons learned back into design and project engineering teams.
  • Engage with core engineering team to support R&D initiatives, including high-power testing using load simulators to validate the stability of FESS and BESS in both grid-connected and islanded modes per UL9540 standards.
  • Coordinate voltage control, frequency control, protection, energy management, load management, and demand & response management for microgrid operations.
  • Validate transformer sizing and battery controller logic for battery BMS and grid-side converters in accordance with DOE, IEEE, and UL standards.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems focus strongly preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in power systems, commissioning, or electrical engineering for utility-scale projects.
  • Strong understanding of distribution-level voltage protection schemes and grid interconnection requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with commissioning of switchgear, transformers, inverters, and protection relays.
  • Familiarity with energy storage systems (BESS, flywheel, hybrid systems), renewable integration, and SCADA / control interfaces.
  • Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, UL 9540 / 9540A, IEC standards, and utility interconnection guidelines.
  • Proficiency with test equipment (relay test sets, insulation resistance testers, power analyzers, etc.).
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills in high-voltage / high-power environments.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites (approximately 50%).
  • Preferred Experience

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain, demonstrating professional authority in power system engineering.
  • Extensive hands-on commissioning experience with Energy Storage Systems (ESS), solar, or hybrid projects at utility scale.
  • Proficiency in relay programming and protection & control systems, including testing and troubleshooting of advanced protective schemes.
  • Strong background in arc flash studies, grounding design, and power system modeling using industry-standard tools (ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, etc.).
  • Knowledge of microgrid control strategies, including black-start, islanding, re-synchronization, and seamless DER integration.
  • Capability to perform advanced power system studies (load flow, stability, harmonic analysis, protection coordination) and apply results directly to commissioning plans.
  • Experience with high-power testing & validation, including full-load tests, step response, and compliance verification (IEEE 1547, UL 1741, UL 9540A).
  • Familiarity with electrical balance-of-plant (BOP) design, switchgear layouts, protective device coordination, and control wiring, with ability to redline or correct during field execution.
  • Skilled in preparing and reviewing commissioning procedures, FAT / SAT reports, protection settings, test records, and turnover packages, with clear communication to utilities, customers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Our Perks & Benefits

  • Employee Rewards Package including equity
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
  • Health Benefits Package (PPO or HSA option), Dental and Vision insurance
  • Unlimited discretionary PTO, 10 days paid company holidays, 100% paid parental leave
  • Life and AD&D insurance with optional additional coverage
  • Voluntary short- and long-term disability insurance
