Description :
The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse.
Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.
Possesses knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team.
Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases.
Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases.
Takes initiative to discuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team.
Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment.
Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures.
Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives.
Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
Maintains vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field and other patient safety concerns.
Gathers required instruments and supplies and serves as a surgical assistant as needed.
Assists with inventory, ordering, and stocking ORs and additional perioperative areas as assigned.
Ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
Call or late coverage may be required related to the facility in which the Surgical Technologist is working.
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
Assists with room set-up, including opening sterile supplies.
Sets up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication needed for the procedure in an accurate, aseptically prioritized, and timely manner.
Performs appropriate surgical counts with the circulator.
Actively participates in procedure pauses / time-outs.
Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
Assists in draping the sterile field.
Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure.
Maintains an organized back table and operative field.
Offers suggestions throughout the procedure for facilitating cases.
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
Prepares sterile dressings.
Actively participates in post-procedure pauses, ensuring proper handling of specimens.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Applies principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure safety of patients and employees.
Prepares case carts according to procedures and preference cards.
Observes patients' conditions and immediately reports changes or significant findings to the physician and registered nurse.
Proactively plans for the next steps in the procedure as needed.
Prepares OR rooms and other areas for receiving patients, including stocking and cleaning equipment.
Maintains responsible stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
Provides patient-centered care consistent with population-specific characteristics.
Verifies the procedure and conducts proper bedside shift report with patients.
Practices using current clinical standards under the supervision of the registered nurse.
Upholds all organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies.
Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability.
Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration, promoting a positive work environment.
Serves as a patient advocate.
Assists other team members with between-case and terminal cleaning of the room.
Prepares the room for the next patient and assists in transporting patients.
Provides comfort and safety measures for patients of specific ages.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives and seeks opportunities to improve processes.
Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments.
Completes all initial and annual competencies and required education.
Provides a positive learning environment for students and new hires.
Participates in training related to new policies or equipment.
Maintains required continuing education related to the field.
Cares for surgical equipment and accessories.
Ensures organization and cleanliness of the surgical area.
Completes all required job responsibilities and assumes additional duties as necessary.
