The Mechanical Engineer / Designer III role is an experienced engineering position requiring significant industry specific experience at RND. We are seeking a talented and innovative Mechanical Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design, development, and implementation of custom automation solutions.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and improving mechanical systems and equipment tailored to automate specific processes for our customers. This role requires a strong understanding of automation systems, as well as the ability to brainstorm mechanical concepts, create mechanical designs in 3D software, detail parts, create a BOM for purchasing, troubleshoot and debug mechanical designs, and determine material and component specifications based on job requirements. A basic understanding of hands-on machine assembly is expected.
This position will be responsible for applying RND standards for both process and component selection to develop robust and innovative custom designs applied to automation machines. This multi-faceted position offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and contribute to the success of various projects. Minimal travel is a part of this position to support the team and our customers.

- Custom Equipment Design : Develop and design full machines, mechanical components, assemblies, and systems for custom automation equipment; ensuring they meet customer requirements, industry standards, and RND specifications.
- Concept Development & Prototyping : Work with cross-functional teams to generate design concepts, create prototypes, and refine designs based on testing and feedback.
- 3D CAD Modeling : Utilize advanced 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor within a Vault Pro environment) to create detailed models and drawings of mechanical systems and components.
- System Integration
Collaborate with electrical and controls engineers to integrate mechanical systems with automation controls, ensuring smooth operation and optimal performance.
Feasibility Studies : Conduct design reviews, feasibility studies, and technical analysis to ensure that high-risk designs are practical, manufacturable, and cost-effective.Run Design Calculations : Perform calculations for force, moment load, inertia, seal pressures, thermal loading, etc. to ensure proper design constraints are followed.Technical Documentation : Generate clear and comprehensive technical documentation, including design specifications, spare parts lists, assembly instructions, and maintenance manuals.Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting : Analyze and resolve design and performance issues during prototyping, testing, and deployment of automation systems.Project Management : Assist in managing project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure on-time delivery of designs that meet client specifications and requirements.Testing & ValidationOversee and participate in the testing of new equipment, ensuring that all designs are thoroughly evaluated and meet the required performance criteria before deployment.
Continuous Improvement : Suggest design improvements, cost-saving solutions, and innovative methods to enhance the functionality and performance of automation equipment.ComplianceEnsure all systems comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, customer specifications, and company policies.

Education : Bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering field.
Experience : Minimum of 10 years of experience in designing and maintaining automation systems.
Skills :
Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault Pro PLM, and AutoCAD softwareExperience with other 3D CAD platforms including SolidWorks or CatiaStrong understanding of automation systems and equipment (e.g., conveyors, robotic arms, pick-and-place systems).Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.Willingness to travel to customer sites as needed.Ability to travel up to 15% of the time for customer support and to attend training.Willingness to travel with Applications / Sales teams to supply engineering expertise on preliminary sales calls.High level of proficiency in Excel and WordWe support equal opportunity employment and diversity.
