Overview

Are you looking for a fast-paced job that will utilize your superior customer service skills in a rewarding environment? The Department of Motor Vehicles may have a position for you as a License Examiner. The DMV values teamwork, commitment, and excellent customer service. This position is located at the Dillon Department of Motor Vehicles Branch Office in Dillon, SC.

Responsibilities

  • The License Examiner I administers road test examinations in the following class vehicles :

Class A : Any combination of vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GWR) of 26,001 pounds, provided the GWR of the towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds.

  • Class B : Any single unit vehicle with a GWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or any such towing vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Class C : Any single unit vehicle or combination that does not meet A or B, but is designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or is placarded for hazardous materials.
  • Class D : Passenger vehicles and non-commercial vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds GVW.
  • Class E : Non-commercial single unit vehicles and non-commercial vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds GVW.
  • Class F : Non-commercial combination vehicles exceeding 26,000 pounds GVW.
  • Class M : Motorcycles, and CDLs if in a CDL Office.
  • Determine an applicant's physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles. Administer written, oral, and automated examinations to assess knowledge of laws and driving procedures. Perform pre-trip inspection of the vehicle's general working condition.
  • Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print documents required for issuing driver licenses, permits, and identification cards for all classes; process document requests (e.g., repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, rebuilt vehicles) and perform edits of name and address fields. Process Motor Vehicle Registration Requests and research suspension inquiries. Modify driver International Registration Plan, registration credentials, and issue automobile dealership licenses.
  • Answer customer inquiries regarding driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements by phone and in person.
  • Greet and direct customers to appropriate areas in the office.
  • Collect all requirement fees and donations for the Gift of Life Trust Fund. Reconcile and prepare daily reports and refund documents. Compute vehicle sales tax and make weight adjustments to vehicle records.
  • Receive, code, and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; package surrendered plates and handle pickup requests.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Faxes, mails documents, and runs errands for the branch office, which may include trips to the post office and making bank deposits.
  • Working Conditions

    Road tests are conducted year-round in various weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold). Testing begins in the early morning and may continue into the evening.

    Minimum Requirements

  • A high school diploma and relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with prior approval.
  • Agency Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license and at least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
  • Nationwide criminal background check including fingerprinting.
  • Before certification to administer CDL knowledge tests, complete a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination, including Introduction to CDL Licensing System, Overview of the CDL Tests and Knowledge Tests.
  • Additional Requirements

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with internal and external customers. Excellent customer service skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements and DMV organizational competencies.
  • Before certification to administer CDL knowledge tests, complete the formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination (as above).
  • Report to the Branch Supervisor or Assistant Branch Supervisor. Under limited supervision, evaluate the skills and abilities of applicants to operate a motor vehicle for all license classes via road tests.
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office setting but may require being outdoors and on the road to conduct tests. Tasks may require sitting or standing for prolonged periods, walking, and continuous talking. Exposure to varying temperatures and to processing chemicals used in license development.
  • May be required to relocate to an office within 30 miles of the home office if needed.
