Gas Distribution Technician
The purpose of the class is to perform and lead others in skilled tasks consisting of constructing, installing, and maintaining natural gas facilities. The class is responsible for leading others, planning, supplies and materials, operating various types of general and special purpose equipment, inspecting work, minor equipment maintenance, training, and minor administrative tasks. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Essential job functions include : installing and removing natural gas services and mains, supervising staff including selecting or recommending selection, training, assigning and evaluating work, and counseling; consulting with supervisor or others, planning jobs, estimating materials, equipment, personnel, and other resources needed and ensuring availability to support work; leading others in operating specialized and general-purpose equipment, hand and power tools to support City construction, installation, and maintenance operations; training subordinates or less experienced personnel in maintenance and installation operations and crew leadership; inspecting job site work and equipment; maintaining clean work area; performing minor equipment or tool maintenance; reporting major malfunctions to supervisor; providing information to public if required; addressing public complaints and resolving or referring to supervisor; performing minor administrative tasks such as completing job-related logs and forms, ordering supplies and materials, maintaining records, preparing reports, or other; attending or conducting staff or project meetings to exchange information; attending, and scheduling others to attend, in-service training, technical classes, and seminars; performing after hours and weekend on call duties; and performing related duties as required.
Minimum requirements include : a high school diploma or GED and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in a construction or technical trade or a closely related field; minimum one year of natural gas experience; general knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of gas distribution system design; general knowledge of Gas Laws and Safety Codes; thorough knowledge of material and methods used in construction of gas systems; ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and senior management; ability to work outside in extreme environmental conditions such as cold, heat, rain, and wind; familiarity with WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint are preferred; living within 20-mile radius of the city limits of Leesburg, or moving within this 20-mile radius within first four months of employment and for continued employment; participation in on-call rotation; availability for call back for gas emergencies; special certifications and licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses required for entering or maintaining the job; valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment; ability to obtain a Class A CDL permit within 6 months of employment; ability to obtain Class A CDL within one year of employment, at City's expense if not already licensed; ability to obtain and maintain city required forklift certification and maintain throughout employment; special skills or equipment certification may be required; participation in Gas Department random drug testing program; and subject to Federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations.
