The Temporary

ASL

Interpreter Pool is intended for qualified applicants to be called upon for appointments on an as-needed basis of limited duration. By applying to this pooled position, applicants are not applying for a specific position. Instead, applicants are submitting an application to be considered for temporary, on-call, and some regularly anticipated needs that may arise to serve our students, staff, faculty, and visitors in both the classroom and at events.

The individual(s) in this position is responsible for providing sign language accommodations under the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and NC State University policies. Sign language interpreters facilitate communication between Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, DeafBlind and hearing consumers. To facilitate communication, interpreters use American Sign Language (

ASL

), Signed English, Contact sign, Oral Transliterating, and / or Cued Speech. Interpreters must be able to adjust to a broad range of consumer needs and preferences and work comfortably with a wide spectrum of interpreting services which requires a high degree of linguistic, cognitive and technical skill. Interpreters must be able to accurately convey the register, tone, intent and content of the consumer's message.

Requirements and Preferences

Work Schedule

Flexible : Monday-Friday, 8am-10pm (2-15 hours a week on an as needed basis). Interpreters will need to clock in and out for each assignment.

Other Work / Responsibilities

Minimum Experience / Education

• Associate's degree with demonstrated experience and knowledge of Deaf culture within the post-secondary educational environment.
• Provisional license from

NCITLB

(North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator License Board) or pending

EIPA

(Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) test results to obtain provisional licensure.

Department Required Skills

Essential Job Duties :

Provide sign language accommodations for all activities (academic as well as non-academic) on NC State campus. Prepare for interpreting assignments by learning new terminology and course material, as needed. Provide interpreting services for trainings, workshops, community awareness activities, and other community services as required or assigned. Mentor interns from local and regional Interpreter Training programs. Attend staff meetings; assist in preparing needed reports for their specific area. Perform related duties as required or assigned. Other duties include :
