Overview

Sr. Plans Examiner - Zoning and Design role with the City of Fort Worth (Development Services Department / Zoning and Design Review Division). The division oversees zoning assessments, site plans, plats, annexations, variances, historic preservation, urban design, code amendments, and collaboration with other city departments on plans and reviews. This position is responsible for reviewing complex applications to determine certificates of appropriateness for developments and signs in historic or form-based districts, and for coordinating with applicants on compliant options.

Responsibilities

  • Review large, complex and high-profile projects and apply the Form Based Code, Zoning and Sign Ordinances for plans examination within departmental guidelines.
  • Provide assistance and advisement on Zoning and Sign Ordinances to contractors, engineers, architects, and the public; deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Manage time effectively to meet departmental expectations and create processes / timelines to complete assigned tasks.
  • Make independent decisions using industry best practices and departmental policies; collaborate with others to resolve project issues and develop workable solutions.
  • Communicate with project owners or contacts regarding necessary corrections.
  • Assist Plans Examiners with complex reviews and enter / update all plans examination and application data in the computer system; monitor status of applications.
  • Identify strategies for continuous customer service improvement, including collaboration with other divisions and software / process enhancements.
  • Provide guidance and oversight of subordinate staff in the supervisor's absence; communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree
  • Four (4) years of city building inspection, plans examination, construction field, landscape architecture, forestry experience or related field
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reviewing site plans for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.
  • Experience reviewing sign applications for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.
  • Experience working for a municipality.
  • Working Conditions and Physical Demands

    Positions may require physical activities such as touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting. Light work may involve exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently; lifting large plan rolls / sets may be required.

    Benefits and Schedule

    Pay Range : $30.80 - $38.50 / hr $64,059 - $80,074 annual . Job posting closing on : Monday, October 20, 2025 . Workdays & Hours : Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm; some evening / weekend work required.
