Multi-Modality Technologist

Summary :

Provides quality care and meets customer expectations by utilizing advanced technical skills covering multiple modalities ie. (CT, MRI, IR, XR). The "Multiple Modality" Technologist routinely covers in at least 1, 2 and up to 3 advanced modalities (MRI, CT, IR).

Responsibilities :

Follow ALARA principles and scans patient with appropriate exposure and minimal repeatability and notes all repeat / rejected images in the appropriate manner.  Always wears personal radiation badge(s) to track exposure. Utilizes bismuth or lead shielding per established protocols. Monitors CTDI Volume to ensure appropriate dose.

Completes appropriate screening before entry into Zone 3 of MRI Department and is able to clear safety issues by following departmental policies and obtaining pertinent / applicable documentation.

Uses hearing protection, cushions for safety / comfort, emergency call button and communicates with the patient throughout the exam. Monitors SAR Levels and keeps them within guidelines as well as instructing patients on the importance of not interlacing fingers or crossing legs. Ensures that patients who require GFR clearance, orbit X-rays and / or pregnancy waivers are identified and all issues are resolved in a timely manner.

Properly identifies patients by name / DOB as well as introducing himself / herself to the patient by first name. B : Reviews prescription for accuracy and completeness, explains procedure, answers questions / concerns and completes / initials screening / history form. Obtains required bloodwork for GFR clearance and diabetic medication clearance for applicable patients. Advises patient on proper exam preparation including removal of deodorant / lotion, dietary restrictions, removal of jewelry and appropriate attire.

Performs venipuncture for contrast administration utilizing aseptic technique when starting heplocks or butterfly injections. Operates power injectors following manufacturer guidelines and selects the appropriate injection protocol for the specific exam. Contrast Dispenses oral contrast to patients appropriately and gives clear instructions. Monitors injection of contrast, recognizes infiltrations promptly and communicates with the patient throughout the exam.

Reviews prescription and protocol for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Proficient in positioning all routine and technically challenging views to obtain optimal quality. Correct selection and proficiency in scanning established protocols. D : Covers appropriate anatomy and utilizes proper scan parameters.

Respects scheduled appointment times and communicates delays to reception staff and / or patients directly. Reviews charge entry and notifies appropriate administrative staff with necessary changes.  Starts and completes examination in ADS workflow and records required information on log sheets. In Mammo checks-in breast ultrasound and includes complete and accurate notes to the Sonographer.

Evaluates images for technical quality, repeats scans as necessary and provides concise relevant history to the Radiologist for interpretation. Performs required post processing and / or transfers appropriate images to dedicated workstations. Ensures prior exams and reports are available for comparison. D accompanying paperwork, annotates contrast administered / amount then verifies images in PACS.

Selects correct patient and updates necessary clinical history. Enters pertinent notes relating to present exam and indicates the reason for exam / location of concern.  Resolves prior examinations accurately. Indicates when shielding was utilized.

Responds immediately in the event of a quench to evacuate patients and staff from harm. Able to undock the MRI table quickly.  Able to recognize specific psychological (ie. claustrophobia, anxiety) and / or physical needs of patients and determine when further assistance is needed.   Able to locate and use all necessary emergency equipment (code cart, oxygen, blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, etc).  Promptly responds to situations which require a timely response and documents relevant information on incident forms.

Follows universal precautions including the use of gloves, gowns and masks as appropriate.  Cleans and disinfects between each patient and can perform / document high level disinfection appropriately.  Disposes of needles and syringes in designated sharps containers, comprehends safe fill levels and seals containers appropriately for pick-up.   Keeps work area and waiting room clean and tidy.

Maintains quality control standards and updates all necessary logs. Able to perform quality control tests per ACR requirements and reboot / shutdown systems per manufacturer guidelines. Actively participates in Time Out procedures required for certain exams. Quality Initiates equipment service requests, updates service logbook and notifies supervisor as necessary.

Functions as a Technologist in other modalities (X-Ray, Stereotactic Biopsy, Bone Density) upon supervisor request and skill level.   Stocks work area with laundry and medical supplies on a daily basis.   Active participation in maintaining break room cleanliness.  Willingly performs other tasks to assist ancillary personnel pertaining to patient care.

Required : Graduate of an approved School of Radiologic Technology. Minimum of 3 years of CT or MRI experience preferred.

Minimum Experience : three years

ARRT Certification of Radiology required. ARRT advanced certification is required or pending in the advanced imaging modality that the Tech is responsible for covering, ie. MRI, CT. CT State Radiology License is required. CPR preferred. Maintains continuing education requirements (24 CE credits per biennium). Possesses excellent knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and physiology Exhibits a degree of professionalism necessary to instill patient confidence.  Maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates respect and courtesy.
