Day Cleaner

Overview

Position : Cleaner at the National Geographic Society. Reports to the Facility Services Manager and Custodial Supervisor. Location : Washington, DC. Employment type : Full-time. Seniority : Entry level.

What You'll Contribute

The Cleaner will perform a variety of custodial duties for National Geographic under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, mop, wash floors and other surfaces in buildings. Operate floor buffers, shampoo machines, and related attachments. Vacuum rugs in offices and public areas. Perform daily spot cleaning and periodic higher-dusting as directed. Clean and dust furniture, exhibit cases, chairs, door trim, light fixtures, and other horizontal surfaces. Wash windowsills and glass in interior doors, partitions, and specified windows. Wash glass and trim at entrance doors and interior / exterior windows. Spot clean interior walls as appropriate. Assist with events as needed. (approx. 45%)
• Clean bathrooms and restock paper supplies daily. Damp wipe glass surfaces, empty waste baskets, service dispensers, and clean tile walls, shelves, stall partitions. Sweep / mop / scrub floors. Monitor for defects (e.g., clogged urinals, lights out) and report to supervisors. Collect trash and compost daily and place in designated areas for removal. Replace liners in containers as required. (approx. 45%)
• Collect building trash and compost daily and manage waste containers per specs. (approx. 10%)

What You'll Bring

Minimum Education Required

GED or High School diploma preferred but not required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

At least three years of work experience in a relevant custodial or facilities role. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Salary Information

The salary rate for this position is $19.00 per hour. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, 401(k) with matching after 6 months, paid time off, holidays, and other perks.

Job Designation

Resident – Flexible schedule depending on team needs and workflow. Schedule may be adjusted throughout the year based on deadlines and work cycles.
