Description : POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of supervisors, responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of work assigned.
Performs analyses on blood and other body fluids for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Maintains proficiency to work in all clinical departments of the laboratory.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education : Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience : No previous experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities : Continually strives to maintain good rapport and cooperation with all departments, medical staff, patients, fellow employees, and visitors by communicating effectively.

Receives general supervision from the Medical Director, Manager, Supervisors, and Section Heads.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs assigned duties accurately, efficiently, and according to established procedures.
Uses proper techniques and / or equipment in the performance of duties.
Prepares specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimens, logging them into the department, and entering all required patient information.
Assures proper testing is conducted as ordered.
Processes and begins analysis of all specimens by manual or automated methods to determine qualitative or quantitative results for efficient reporting.
Assures quality control criteria are met before releasing any reports.
Immediately repeats any procedures that appear to be out of control following established departmental protocol.
Keeps work organized to avoid confusion and potential for error.
Consistently reviews results for accuracy and completeness before releasing them.
Repeats results that are not consistent with previous outcomes, diagnoses, or that fail delta checks.
Requests new specimens when appropriate.
Seeks assistance from supervisors when difficulties in identification, interpretation, or processing are encountered, or when rare abnormal results are obtained.
Assists with training of technical personnel by demonstration of techniques and review of work performance when requested by supervisors.
Participates in proficiency testing or quality assurance activities as instructed.
Maintains current knowledge of laboratory and departmental policies and procedures, as well as performance standards.
Demonstrates continuous awareness and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.
Advises supervisors of potential hazards when noted.
Demonstrates constant awareness and compliance with departmental policies.
Suggests ways to improve laboratory services when appropriate.
Maintains all departmental equipment and supplies.
Checks the performance of all instruments daily and maintains all equipment, including backup, in working condition.
Communicates any problems to supervisors promptly and notifies affected areas if delays occur.
Maintains ability to troubleshoot both instrumental and procedural problems when they arise.
Strives to be familiar with principles of both instruments and procedures for achieving acceptable troubleshooting skills.
Assists with maintaining sufficient inventory of departmental reagents and supplies.
Submits information or requests to supervisors when additional materials are anticipated or when problems are encountered with current supplies or reagents.
Maintains cost control in the utilization of materials and suggests ways to improve conservation as appropriate.
Rotates, dates, and tests reagents as received or prepared to ensure accuracy, avoid expiration, and maintain availability.
Assists with the implementation of new procedures or evaluation of new products or equipment.
Evaluates new products, procedures, or techniques and provides written information regarding findings to supervisors as soon as possible after evaluation.
Suggests changes in methodologies or workflows that could increase accuracy or efficiency.
Performs specimen collection duties.
Verifies patient identification prior to specimen collection to assure accurate testing.
No more than one error will be acceptable per any 12-month period.
Responds promptly to requests for specimen collection.
Communicates effectively with care areas if any delays occur due to emergencies.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Accepts additional assignments from lab supervisors.
Voluntarily assists co-workers when patient care priorities and workloads fluctuate.
