The Air Force JAG Corps – Military Attorney
If the traditional civilian career path has left you wanting more, both personally and professionally, a JAG career will re-inspire your love of the law. As an Air Force JAG you will practice in a wide range of legal fields, see the world, and become the lawyer you've always wanted to be.
Candidate Requirements
Service Commitment
The initial active-duty commitment is four years, beginning on the day you depart for Officer Training School (OTS). You are not obligated to serve until you accept a JAG assignment.
Prior Military Service
If you are selected for direct appointment and have prior active-duty, National Guard, or Reserve service, you will receive credit for length of service in pay calculations. Prior commissioned service can advance entry grade and date of rank, and all active-duty service is credited toward retirement.
Application Process
Selection boards are held in February, April, August, and November. Applications must be submitted online on or before the 10th of the month that precedes the board (e.g., January 10 for the February board). After submitting your application, a Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) at any Air Force Base will schedule an interview before the board date. The interview must be completed on or before the first of the board month.
Please do not mail application materials directly to HQ USAF / JAX. Additional materials after the interview date will not be accepted.
Recommendation Letters
Letters should be written by individuals who can attest to your work ethic, duty performance, and leadership potential. Address all letters to "Selection Board Members" and upload them as part of your online application.
