Examples of work for this specific vacancy include, but are not limited to :

• Road and Surface / Roadside Maintenance
• Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.
• Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and traveling public.
• Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside - planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal / grinding.
• Snow & Ice
• Maintains roadways for snow and ice control : removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
• Prepares and inspects winter equipment - maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
• Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps and roadways.
• Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Minimum Qualifications

A Valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction.

Experience : One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).

OR

Education Substitution : Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

AND

Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2 : Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you've previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and / or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and / or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.

Weather elements : May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
