Overview
VANIHCS is seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates to fill Police Officer positions. This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Police Service (PS). The mission of the PS is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities.
Duties
- Serve as a Police Officer ensuring a safe and secure environment across VA administrations and properties in various settings, including VHA Medical Centers, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, and domiciliaries nationwide.
- Act as a key point of contact and representative of VA Police Services, often serving as the first person a Veteran or visitor encounters entering a VA facility.
- Provide security and assistance to Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, and visitors; engage and communicate to ensure positive outcomes and safety.
- Perform policing services across VA properties, understanding differences among Exclusive, Concurrent, and Proprietorial jurisdictions and applying appropriate laws and processes.
- Work Schedule : Full Time, 24 / 7 shift coverage including weekends and holidays.

GS-05 level
Experience : One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04, involving knowledge of laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, and maintaining order and safety; preferred experience in police or related security roles. Note : Experience must be documented with job title, duties, dates, and hours per week.Education Substitution : A full 4-year bachelor's degree in Police Science or related field may substitute for the experience.Combination : Education plus experience or police academy training may substitute for up to 3 months of specialized experience; documentation required.GS-06 level
Time-In-Grade : Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.Experience : One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, including duties such as patrolling, responding to emergencies, interviewing witnesses, securing crime scenes, and reporting; note that security guard experience alone is not qualifying.Competencies : Arrest, Criminal Investigation, First Response, Interpersonal Skills, Public Safety and Security, Security.Basic Requirements for VA Law Enforcement
Must carry and qualify with agency firearms on duty.Proficiency in English (Public Law 94-102).Lautenberg Amendment considerations for domestic violence convictions against firearm possession.Background security investigation; drug testing; arrest authority at GS-6 and above.Complete Basic Police Officer Course (8 weeks) at LETC.Maintain physical, psychological, and weapons qualifications; annual physical and psychological examination.CPR certification; AED training; valid state driver's license; carry required credentials.Failure to meet requirements may be grounds for termination.
