PARKS AND NATURAL RESOURCES SUPERVISOR

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES :
This is an administrative position that supervises a group of workers engaged in Township Parks, maintenance, and recreation field maintenance, community program and events support, and natural resource initiatives, including trail systems, forestry programs, and nature preservation areas. This position plays a critical role in fostering a healthy ecosystem and supporting land preservation and environmental sustainability. An employee in this class is responsible for the daily operations of t he Parks Division and supervision of labor crews, which may include equipment operators and laborers. The employee is responsible for organizing and coordinating the work schedules of the crews, supervising and providing some technical supervision of functions performed by subordinates.
An employee in this classification will work independently with periodic reviews by supervisors to ensure adherence to departmental and Township policies. The employee works under the supervision of the Leisure Services Director. This position shall work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary to accomplish the goals of the Township.

Administers the preparation, care, and maintenance of municipal grounds, including landscaping, turf, trees, irrigation, lighting, playscapes and pavement.Oversees the planning, maintenance, and enhancement of nature trails, woodlands, and open spaces.Monitors ecological conditions and recommends improvements for soil, water, and habitat health.Develops interpretive trail features to foster environmental education and awareness.Cooperatively manages the community forestry program, including tree planting, maintenance, and health assessments.Coordinates with Planning, consultants, and volunteers to maintain a sustainable urban forest.Coordinates with certified arborists, consultants, and volunteers to maintain a sustainable urban forest.Develops and supports stewardship programs to engage the community in maintaining natural areas.Coordinates volunteer events for invasive species removal, planting days, and educational outreach.Supports and implements policies that advance the objectives of the Land Preservation Ordinance, including land acquisition assessments and preservation planning.Administers the cleaning and maintenance of Leisure Services Parks facilities, including the interior and exterior of all park buildings.Administers the preparation and support of community special events and Leisure Services programs and operations, including event setup and cleanup.Develops and implements daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and yearly maintenance schedules and standards for community grounds and Leisure Services facilities, as necessary.Serves as a liaison with volunteer groups and other divisions to coordinate use of park facilities.Recommends and assists in the purchase of equipment.Participates in the selection and the evaluation of subordinates as may be assigned.Supervises and assigns work to full and part-time support personnel.Maintains and compiles accurate Parks, Sports Center budgets, facility inspection and other reports and statistics as required.Develops sound operational standards and procedures for training staff on Parks and the implementation of services.Masters and achieves positive public relations visible through courteous, motivated staff and well-maintained facilities.Responds proactively to current trends and practices of the industry.Develops, implements, and documents effective training for all full-time and seasonal employees on the use of all equipment, department policies and procedures, emergency plans, and risk management practices.Attends meetings and assists the Leisure Services Advisory Committee and other Township Boards and Commissions as needed.Provides personnel evaluations when required.Performs other duties as assigned.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Environmental Science, Business Administration or related field; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills.Must possess a current, valid Michigan Driver's License with a driving history that does not create liability concerns; which includes, but is not limited to, convictions for reckless driving, careless driving, suspended license, or convictions involving drinking and impaired driving.A minimum of four years of related professional experience.Knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques commonly used in parks regarding turf care, athletic field management and general grounds maintenance activities.Knowledge in trail operations, forestry practices, and wildlife and land management.Understanding of ecosystem management principles and land preservation strategies.Obtain or achieve one or more of the following certifications :Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner
Prescribed Burn Manager CertificationMichigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator CertificationCertified Stormwater OperatorPollinator Steward CertificationMichigan Conservation Stewards ProgramKnowledge of facility cleaning and maintenance.Knowledge of park maintenance objectives as they pertain to quality standards established for optimum community use.Experience in a variety of grounds maintenance activities, some of which are in a supervisory capacity.Knowledge of the principles and practices of office administration.Ability to lay out, direct, and oversee the work of employees, performing skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled grounds and facility maintenance activities, and to obtain efficient results.Ability to create reports and maintain accurate records.Capability to understand and work within bargaining unit contract(s).Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Township Officials, supervisors, and other employees – both bargaining unit and non-union.Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.Ability to be available to the public and work a flexible schedule as needed.PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
