Position Summary
As a Senior BESS Field Service Technician, you will play a key role in the commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of utility-scale battery energy storage systems. You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of BESS assets in the field, while also mentoring junior technicians and supporting engineering teams in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform commissioning, routine maintenance, and emergency repairs on BESS equipment (inverters, battery racks, PCS, HVAC, transformers, and switchgear).
- Diagnose and troubleshoot system faults using SCADA, PLCs, and other diagnostic tools.
- Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and OEM manuals.
- Provide on-site technical leadership and mentoring for junior technicians.
- Serve as liaison between field operations and engineering / support teams.
- Document all field activities, including service reports, commissioning records, and safety audits.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and company safety protocols.
- Support remote monitoring and diagnostics teams with field-level feedback and analysis.
- Coordinate with contractors, utilities, and clients during system outages or upgrades.
- Travel to project sites, often on short notice, for scheduled or emergency service.
Qualifications
Required :
High school diploma or GED; Technical certification or associate degree in electrical, electronics, or mechanical engineering.5+ years of experience in field service, with at least 2 years specific to BESS or related power systems (PV, UPS, MV systems, etc.).Strong understanding of AC / DC theory, 3-phase power systems, and energy storage system architectures.Proficient with test equipment (multimeters, insulation testers, IR cameras, etc.).Comfortable working on energized systems up to 1,000VDC / 480VAC.Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively.Preferred :
OEM certifications from BESS manufacturers (e.g., Tesla, Fluence, Sungrow, Powin, etc.)Experience with SCADA and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, CANbus, etc.)NABCEP, OSHA 30, NFPA 70E certification a plus.Familiarity with power plant operations, microgrids, or hybrid systems.Key Competencies
