Firefighter Position
The purpose of this job position is to provide general firefighting work, respond to calls for emergency service and to perform related work as required. This class consists of technical work in prevention, control, and suppression of structural and non-structural fires; responds to fire and rescue calls; fire suppression, renders emergency medical assistance while on scene; and operate rescue equipment. This class works under direct supervision of the shift supervisor, reporting all incidents, conditions, or activities to the shift supervisor through periodic notifications, meetings both formal and informal. This class generally works five days a week, Monday through Friday.
Essential duties and responsibilities include : portraying a professional attitude and maintaining a positive public image; performing duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies; performing highly skilled work in fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, technical rescue; maintaining firefighting equipment and fire stations; providing general fire station maintenance duties; maintaining current training standards by participating in various methods of training related to firefighting, medical, hazmat, rescue skills; utilizing and operating various types of machinery and equipment; participating and delivering community risk reduction programs; representing Orangeburg County Fire Service by interacting and communicating with various groups and individuals; working under stressful, high-risk conditions and with life-threatening situations. Minimum education and experience requirements : high school diploma or GED. Requires at least three (3) years of experience as a Firefighter I or equivalent.
Upon hire : successful completion of Orangeburg County JPAT; successful completion of Fire Brigade Clearance.
Special qualifications minimum : IFSAC Firefighter I; SCFA EVDT Or equivalent; SCFA Pump Ops I Or equivalent; SCFA Hazmat Ops Or equivalent; CPR / First Aid Or equivalent.
Preferred : IFSAC Firefighter II Or equivalent; SCFA Basic Auto Extrication Or equivalent; SCFA Pump Ops II Or equivalent; EMR / BLS.
To be obtained within 2 years of employment : IFSAC Firefighter II Or equivalent; SCFA Basic Auto Extrication Or equivalent; SCFA Pump II Or equivalent; SCFA Aerial Ops Or equivalent; EMR / BLS; SCFA RIT Or equivalent; SCFA Rescuing the Rescuer Or equivalent. SCFA Tech Rescuer Or equivalent.
Physical demands : performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying 35 to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. Unavoidable hazards (work environment) involve routine and frequent exposure to : bright / dim light; dusts and pollen; extreme heat and / or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; animals / wildlife; vibration; fumes and / or noxious odors; traffic; moving machinery; electrical shock; heights; radiation; disease / pathogens; toxic / caustic chemicals; explosives; violence; other extreme hazards not listed above.
