JOB SUMMARY

The Permit Technician performs front-line customer service and construction development-related tasks. This includes reviewing, accepting, distributing, processing, documenting and maintaining departmental information, reports, plans, specifications, applications, permits and related inspections according to established guidelines. Permit Technicians also provide organizational and technical support to the Building Inspection Division staff and other departments associated with permit issuance.

Responsibilities

  • Work with minimal supervision while providing department support.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, jurisdiction staff and the public.
  • Greet clients with excellent customer service, refer them to the appropriate staff member, and educate customers on the permit process when needed.
  • Provide accurate and up-to-date information regarding the permit process and permit activity.
  • Distribute and review building permit applications for issuance according to department procedures and legal requirements.
  • Review electronic plans and submittals, blueprints, submissions and plans for completeness and basic code compliance.
  • Verify structure plot plan, lot location, planning / zoning and engineering requirements.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding project status and provide information.
  • Compute mathematical, statistical and financial computations quickly and correctly, and process fees as charged by the Building Official according to adopted jurisdiction fees.
  • Maintain and update building permit applications log and plan checks received by the Building Inspection Division.
  • Generate and maintain accurate record keeping for active building permits and inspections; issue appropriate permits.
  • Prepare monthly reports for the Assessor's Office and Building Standards.
  • Operate standard office equipment including computers and related software.
  • Interact effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds with firmness and tact.
  • Communicate clearly to read requirements and to understand people at the counter and on the telephone.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with all contacts during the course of work.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Possess, or obtain within six (6) months (extension up to one (1) year with manager's approval) an International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Permit Technician. All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clerical experience involving public contact, preferably in building construction; OR a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Permit Technician with a private or public agency.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to utilize various permitting software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Working Conditions

  • Regularly sit and stand for long periods; kneel and squat to retrieve materials; lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Fast-paced environment with deadlines and multiple projects.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
  • Travel to client sites and / or job sites may be required.
  • Salary Range

    $20 - $31 USD
