Hourly wage : $26.51-29.53

Mechanic

Revision Date : February 2020 Primary Objective of Position The Mechanic is responsible for mechanical repair and maintenance of CNG, diesel, and gasoline transit vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
Essential Functions of the Position

- Responsible for performing mechanical repairs of Metro Bus property
Overhaul and repair CNG, diesel and gas motors, brakes, air units, electrical systems, hydraulic / kneeling systems, heating / air conditioning systems, remote heating units, and other mechanical equipment
Diagnose operating difficulties and make repairs on a variety of hydraulic, engine, air and electrical systemsPerform road calls and / or switch out buses when equipment fails. Trouble shoot, fix and repair buses roadsideOccassionally fabricate parts no longer available and periodic welding and iron workMonitor driver write-ups in computerized fleet maintenance system and perform repairsResponsible for preventative maintenance and repair of Metro Bus propertyPerforms scheduled preventative maintance and repairs on CNG, dielse and gasoline transit vehicles
Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on Metro Bus facilities, grounds and equipmentProperly complete maintenance records and formsCommunicates courteously and professionally and maintains respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers in carrying out job functionsPerforms all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practicesKnows and follows safety rules and guidelines as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss
Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing workWhen potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely mannerPerforms other duties and activities as assignedMinimum Qualifications
The job requires a two (2) year degree or certification from a technical or community college or two (2) years of experience in automotive or heavy duty vehicle mechanics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have, or be able to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License, with passenger and air brake endorsements, and current DOT medical certification.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required include :
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy duty automotive or mechanical equipmentConsiderable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the tradeAbility to interpret and work efficiently from maintenance manuals, charts, electrical and hydraulic schematics, or written and oral instructionsProficient in the use of computers and electronic diagnostic programsMust be able to read and speak English well enough to read technical documents and effectively communicate with team members. Bilingual a plusMust possess standard mechanic’s toolsAbility to work flexible work schedules including late evenings, early mornings and weekendsInterpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, committees and groups; and to diffuse situations / conversations that have escalated beyond normal limitsAbility to maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License, with passenger and air brake endorsements, and a current DOT medical certificateDesirable Qualifications
Experience with transit vehicles and systemsPhysical Demands and Working Environment
This position is predominately in a maintenance shop environment requiring extended periods of walking, climbing, stopping, kneeling, crawling and reachingSome exposure to temperature extremes, moderate exposure to noise, physical and / or chemical hazardsUtilizes personal computer, phone and other office equipment on a regular basis;Will require limited travel outside of the maintenance shop.
