Student Support And Leadership Position
This position provides student support and leadership to mitigate and eliminate barriers to educational success for students of color at GVSU with a specific focus on initiatives supporting Native and Indigenous students. This position will cultivate an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA).
Salary & Benefits : Minimum starting salary of $57,000, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, dental, life insurance, generous employer retirement contributions, wellness resources, and tuition waiver effective on date of hire.
Primary Duties
Provide student support and leadership within the Office of Multicultural Affairs and collaborate with campus partners to further divisional and university goals.
Develop, plan, execute, assess, and provide overall leadership for retention programs aimed at Native and Indigenous students such as Native American Student Orientation, Mno'chigewin, Native American Heritage Month, Spring Pow Wow, Anishinaabe Summer Leadership Camp, and Native American Student Graduation Reception.
Create robust programming that educates the campus community on issues pertinent to communities served by the Office of Multicultural Affairs including monthly heritage month programming as well as providing support to student organization efforts.
Recruit and retain students from specific populations; provide support, advocacy, and referrals to students by creating one-on-one meeting plans, developing goals, and engaging in non-academic advising as needed.
Track and assess program effectiveness, year-end reporting, and assist with goal setting and strategic planning for the office.
Co-supervise and provide leadership to student employees and graduate assistants.
Support Office of Multicultural Affairs communication efforts by maintaining the center's website, social media, and creating marketing materials.
Identify and secure program-specific resources, including grants, sponsorships, and in-kind support, to sustain and enhance OMA initiatives.
Serve as a liaison to the Native American Advisory Council or other Native / Indigenous-serving entities to align advocacy efforts for the GV Native / Indigenous student community.
Perform other duties as required / assigned by leadership.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in related field.
Minimum of three to five (3-5) years related experience and / or training or equivalent combination.
Excellent written, verbal, presentation, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills.
Understanding of and commitment to issues of diversity, gender equity, and social justice.
A high degree of confidentiality, discretion, judgment, collaboration, and the ability to build strong relationships.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, or related field.
Higher education experience.
Experience managing and supervising teams and / or projects.
Experience managing websites and social media platforms.
Experience related to retention in higher education.
Familiarity with and / or experience building intersectional support structures for students of color.
Experience in higher education working with Native American / Indigenous students.
Ability to manage multiple projects independently and working toward shared team goals.
Experience developing, administering, and evaluating student programming and events.
Experience developing and delivering diversity, equity, and inclusion education, workshops, and training.
Budget, grant writing implementation, and assessment experience.
Working Conditions
Normal office environment. Some travel may be required.
