Summary :
Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Maintains accountability for his / her own practice and participates in patient and family teaching throughout all stages of pregnancy. Collaboration with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Delegates / provides direction to other nursing personnel in the unit in accordance with their level of experience and expertise.
Typical Schedule :
12-hour NOC Shift, Every 3rd Weekend and holiday rotation with a backup call obligation. This position will float to Med / Surg if the department is closed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
General nursing care responsibilities (but are not limited to) :
- Provides skilled nursing care in accordance with Nurse Practice Acts
- Follows the Standards of Nursing Care as well as the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation while delivering high quality patient care.
- Performs / documents timely / accurate patient assessments / care as outlined in Nursing Standards of Care
Plans, implements, and documents a focused problem list with goals for each patient
Evaluates patient progress toward goalsContinually strives to meet and exceed customer service standards in all interactions with customers, which include patients, visitors, other hospital employees, and medical staffDemonstrates a team / collaborative approach with colleagues
Helps and supports co-workers and physiciansHelps and supports patients and their familiesCommunicates effectivelyCommunicates an accurate, concise end of shift patient report in a timely manner

Specific Job duties :
Labor and Delivery nursing care responsibilities (but are not limited to) :Monitors patient throughout (before / during / after) the laborPerforms basic IV skillsKnowledge of hemodynamicsAdministers pain medication as orderedTakes and records patient’s vital signs, ascertains if problematicReads fetal monitor & ascertains if problematicIdentifies & manages life-sustaining physiological functions in unstable patientsCares for patients Pitocin, MgSO4 & continuous epiduralEnsures patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properlyAids doctor during delivery and as neededImmediate care of newborn (clean, weigh, etc)Mother-Baby care responsibilities (but are not limited to) :
Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ (both mother and infant) care plansMaintains a comfortable, safe and clean environment for mother and infant ? Assists mother with her hygienic needsChecks mother for any post-partum bleedingExamines mother’s fundusInspects c-section incision (if applicable)Assesses mother’s pain, if anyPerforms emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to postpartum depressionMonitors bonding between mother and infantProvides mother with breast-feeding tips, Educates mother on sore nipple managementTeaches mother bathing tips for infantKeeps track of all feeds and diapersInvolves and educates family / significant others in implementing best practices for mother and infant careRecords all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate formsPerforms other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment settingFloat among various clinical services, where qualified and competentOrganization and Community Expectations :

Graduate of accredited school of nursingOne year of acute care experience2-3 years of labor / delivery experience preferredProficient keyboarding and computer skillsAbility to learn OMC computer applicationsHospital administrative supportHuman resources or employee scheduling systemsCurrently licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse in good standingCurrent BLS certificationCurrent ACLS certificationCurrent NRP certificationCurrent STABLE certificationFetal Heart MonitoringMeets OMC health requirements
