NOTE : THE DATA CENTER ADMINISTRATOR POSITION CURRENTLY OPEN INVOLVES SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION OF VIRTUAL SERVER ENVIRONMENTS AND OFFERS A HYBRID WORK SCHEDULE WITH THE OPTION TO WORK 2 DAYS REMOTELY AND 3 DAYS IN THE OFFICE DURING A NORMAL WORK WEEK.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in computer science or a closely related field and a minimum of three years' responsible experience in the design and maintenance of a distributed network environment, including a minimum of one year of supervisory experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license from state of residence.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK

Thorough knowledge of internet networks, connections, wiring and cabling, and network management.

Thorough knowledge of Local Area Network (LAN) topology and software, including servers, Local Area Network switches, routers and gateways.

Good knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of project management.

Ability to collaborate with other personnel by providing or using respective technical solutions.

Ability to learn new technologies quickly with a high level of proficiency.

Ability to identify, define, and solve problems.

Ability to effectively establish schedules, priorities and develop project implementation plans.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to manage projects to completion.

Ability to plan, evaluate and supervise the work of technical staff.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with department heads, consultants, vendors, employees and people with varying technical abilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing of pulling of objects and materials.

Ability to sit for extended hours while operating a keyboard.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)

Manages network communications by coordinating, maintaining and supporting Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems, and Telecommunication systems, including servers, switching and routing equipment, and peripherals.

Resolves issues by troubleshooting highly complex network / system problems across a broad range of technologies.

Maintains compliance policies involved in the monitoring, backup procedures, disaster recovery requirements, and anti-virus protection of system security.

Responds to system failures, both hardware and software, to bring applications back online quickly.

Communicates with users, vendors and related entities in order to escalate complex issues and problems by utilizing established incident protocols.

Insures efficient and trouble free operation of all data and telecommunication equipment, remote and local communications controllers, remote and local personal computing devices and remote printers.

Oversees the installation of hardware and software.

Recommends updates of existing network and server systems by researching new and emerging technologies and developing specifications for hardware and software acquisitions.

Prepares project plans and makes scheduling decisions for network or server upgrades.

Acts as a primary interface with equipment vendors for resolving problems.

Establishes a growth plan for the network to insure the best quality service in a state-of-the-art environment.

Supervises technical staff by directing and assigning work in order to reach goals and objectives.

Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK

An employee in the class is responsible for problem solving, vendor interfacing, remote communications, technical training, and network security for all aspects of network communications, including personal computers, network servers, local area networks, and telecommunication systems. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures under the general supervision of the Information Technology Deputy Director or other superior and supervision is exercised over technical personnel as assigned.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9 : 00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
