About The Role The Director - Tax will be responsible for leading and developing the internal tax function and the tax strategies that support the business and its growth aspirations. This position will be a hands-on leader, understanding the financial details and translating them into operational and strategic opportunities. This position will lead and oversee all aspects of Grocery Outlet’s tax compliance and tax provision processes, ensuring compliance with all U.S. federal, state and locate tax laws and US GAAP reporting requirements. The role will manage the efficient use of external resources to help execute the responsibilities and strategies. This role will deliver high quality tax reporting as well as optimize the company's tax profile and liquidity. This position will ensure compliance with tax laws in the various states and local jurisdictions that the company operates. This role reports to the VP - Corporate Controller.

Responsibilities Tax Compliance Oversight : Manage and oversee the process and co-sourcing relationship with outside providers in relation to the preparation and review of U.S. federal and state tax returns, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.

Tax Provision Leadership : Hands-on preparation and management of the quarterly and annual tax provisions under ASC 740 inclusive of SEC compliant disclosures, including coordination with finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Financial Reporting : Preparation and oversight of tax-related journal entries and account reconciliations for all tax related activities

Strategic Planning : Partner with Company leaders to identify opportunities to optimize the company’s tax position. Research the implications of tax laws / policies and advise senior management on tax-related issues.

Team Leadership : Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing tax operations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Process Optimization : Drive efficiencies in tax operations using a forward thinking and creative approach, including the use of technology, automation, and best practices, while enhancing accuracy and scalability.

Stakeholder Collaboration : Work closely with cross-functional teams, including finance, treasury, and accounting, as well as external advisors, to support company-wide objectives. Demonstrate proactive leadership on tax matters while maintaining flexibility to respond quickly to new developments in the business. Communicate complex technical matters and risks to executive management.

Indirect Tax Compliance Oversight : Manage and oversee the preparation and review of indirect tax areas including sales & use tax, B&O tax, gross receipts tax, sugar tax, and personal property tax, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.

Policies, Procedures and SOX Compliance : Develop and implement policies and procedures. Foster and adhere to a strong internal control environment.

Tax Audit Oversight : Manage tax audits and settlement negotiations.

About The Pay Base Salary Range : $180,000 - $200,000 Annually

Final compensation will be determined based upon experience and skills and may vary based on location.

About You 10+ years overall progressive experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role overseeing tax compliance and provision processes

Minimum 3 years experience in a top tier public accounting firm preferred

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field

Master’s Degree in Taxation Preferred

CPA preferred

Public company tax experience required

Expertise in U.S. federal and state tax laws

Proficiency in US GAAP financial reporting of income taxes

Experience with ERP and tax systems

Retail or consumer products background preferred

Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team, with excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills

Analytical mindset with a track record of solving complex technical and process related issues

Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines
