About the Department :

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has research labs and faculty distributed over three campuses addressing three primary research thrust areas : the Fairfax campus (materials, energy, and sustainability), the Science and Technology campus in Manassas (biomedical-biochemistry and synthetic organic chemistry), and the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (environmental chemistry). The research funding portfolio includes the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), other government and non-profit agencies, and private industry. Faculty in the department have close collaborations with researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Naval Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and Inova Health System, among others. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers undergraduate programs leading to the BA or BS (ACS certification) degrees in Chemistry, with optional concentrations in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or Materials Chemistry; a five-year BS / Accelerated MS degree; a traditional MS degree; and a PhD in Chemistry. About the Position :

The Tenure-Track Assistant Professor is responsible for preparing and teaching courses in chemistry, conducting research in chemistry, as well as advising majors toward academic, career, and life success. The position works with the Department Chair and department faculty and staff. This position also fully interacts with the student body in terms of teaching, advising, and research. In addition, this position interacts with other faculty and staff regarding recruiting, curriculum design, and other similar requirements of the department and university.

Responsibilities :

• Teaching : Teaches graduate and undergraduate courses as assigned;
• Research : Establishes and maintains an active and sustainable research program; and
• Contributes to the department, college, university, and community.
