Lateral Paramedic Firefighters
The City of El Cajon is looking for lateral paramedic firefighters. Pay rates are calculated based on full-time, non-probationary experience as a paramedic firefighter. Educational incentive pay is available to employees who possess a college degree in a job-related field upon date of hire. An associate's degree will provide a 2.5% salary increase, while a bachelor's degree will provide a 5% salary increase.
The recruitment process requires interested applicants to submit and complete the online application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline. Candidates who meet the qualification guidelines will be invited to participate in the examination process outlined below. Successful candidates will be placed on the City of El Cajon eligibility list for employment consideration for at least six months.

The City of El Cajon's Fire Department is a member of Heartland Fire & Rescue (HFR). HFR was formed via a Joint Powers Agreement to administer fire and rescue services for the Cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove at the Battalion Chief level and above. The 2025-2026 County of San Diego EMS protocols will be used during the Appraisal Interview and Paramedic Skills Assessment. Candidates must be successful in every component of the examination process to be placed on the City of El Cajon's eligibility list for employment consideration. Candidates who move forward in the pre-employment process may go through a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination, psychological exam, and a pre-employment medical evaluation.
