The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission ("PVSC"), a publicly owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking Mechanics. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day ("MGD") of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 MGD.

Position Summary : Responsible for the repair, maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and overhaul of all mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, piping, valves, and process equipment for the PVSC wastewater treatment facility. Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis.

Education : High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or equivalency certificate. Advanced training at a technical college or trade school is desirable.

Requirements : Knowledge of production machinery, pumps, and other heavy rotating machinery. Ability to understand mechanical drawings as well as pneumatic and hydraulic schematics. Knowledge of machine shop practices and the basic principles of rigging and millwright work. Knowledge of the safety precautions that must be exercised during maintenance and repair.

Experience : Mechanic I - Minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience.

Mechanic II - Minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience.

Mechanic III - Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience.

Physical Demands : Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects.

Working Conditions : Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.

The expected base pay range is $76,950 to $118,020. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidates relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
