Representative Duties

Student Assistants perform duties that range from unskilled to skilled in various departments and may involve clerical, manual, or public-facing tasks. Duties are designed to align with the student's academic and career goals and may vary by assignment. Training may occur on the job, and assignments are structured to fit class schedules.

Specific duties are defined by the appropriate Division / Department. Training and supervision are provided as needed.

There are multiple levels of Student Assistant roles (I – III) with increasing responsibility and experience requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Experience :

  • Student Assistant I : Little or no prior experience or education required
  • Student Assistant II : Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required
  • Student Assistant III : Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required
  • Skills and Competencies :

  • Skills required to perform job assignments; limited independent judgment may be required depending on level and assignment
  • Ability to balance work and studies
  • Qualifications :

  • Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work-study through the financial aid office to be eligible for a student assistant position under the federal work-study funding
  • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to diversity and inclusive practices (DEIA) as related to equity-minded classroom and campus environments

    Conditions of Employment

    Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. Employment is at-will; there are no entitlement rights or benefits for these positions. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel by student employment in work-study or work experience programs.

    Hours : Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 hours per week during fall / spring; outside those semesters, up to 28 hours per week. No other District employment in the same fiscal year is allowed.

    Employment Requirements

    Employment is contingent upon verification of CalWORKs work-study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification as governed by Education Code, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. The position does not include fringe benefits or paid holidays. Hours and start date will be arranged with the supervisor.
