Job Description :

SUNY Schenectady County Community College seeks a full-time Participant Services Specialist in the Schenecady College and Career Outreach Center. Reporting to the Associate Executive Director of the Schenectady College and Career Outreach Center (SCCOC), the Participant Services Specialist (PSS) will provide employment and college information, advisement, outreach, referral, and placement services to center participants. This is an administrative staff (unrepresented), full-time, (12-month) position subject to annual appropriation of longstanding funds by New York State.

SUNY Schenectady County Community College administers SCCOC, while the center is overseen by the SUNY University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (UCAWD). UCAWD operates 10 Educational Opportunity Centers (EOCs) and two Outreach Centers across New York State that provide adult education, workforce development programs and further support to residents with limited access to resources (not SUNY Schenectady students). SCCOC is located on the first floor of the Center City in Downtown Schenectady.

Responsibilities :

  • Perform case management tasks for participants, including the participant admission process, needs assessment, skill development, referral to supportive services, and follow up on participants' progress.
  • Provide employment assistance with the preparation of cover letters and resumes, employment information, job seeking and job placement assistance.
  • Assist in management of partnerships with local employers to connect participants with employment opportunities.
  • Provide educational assistance with identifying program opportunities and application support.
  • Travel to community agencies and organizations to conduct outreach and recruitment (i.e., facilitate presentations and workshops at various agencies; represent the Center at open houses, college and career fairs, etc.).
  • Maintain and update participants' case records in the SUNY UCAWD Banner Student Information database as required, as well as prepare and retain other records and documentation as necessary.
  • Follow up with prospective participants and community agencies via phone calls, email, or written correspondence.
  • Work as a team with the SCCOC staff in developing and implementing participant enrichment events (i.e., career and educational fairs, career and educational preparation workshops, field trips of colleges and worksites, programmatic opportunities etc.)
  • Support all aspects of training programs run with partners.
  • Provide referrals as appropriate or requested (i.e., food insecurity, social services, domestic violence resources, housing, etc.).
  • Administer assessment testing; including TABE, for academic and / or training enrollments and referrals.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Executive Director of SCCOC.

Requirements :

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Associate's degree
  • Experience in a related professional or internship setting, or degree in a directly-related field, preferably working with communities with limited access to resources.
  • Strong and engaging communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to employ strong time management skills.
  • Comfort with carrying out directions for independent work, as well as representing the center when working directly with participants and partner organizations
  • Preferred Qualifications :
