About the Role The New York Times is looking for an editor to lead The Upshot, a desk that produces innovative explanatory journalism on politics, policy and everyday life, making complex issues accessible and engaging for readers. The Upshot hosts data visualization, policy analysis, newsletters, and interactive features, supported by a multidisciplinary team of reporters, software developers, and data visualizers. You will lead the desk’s next era, shaping its news coverage, enterprise reporting, storytelling forms, technologies, and platforms.
This is an in-office position based in New York City with regular attendance in the office each week.
Responsibilities Lead a team that produces multiformat reporting including explanatory policy journalism, data-driven graphics, and standalone interactive features
Drive news coverage on the desk, including competitive stories and ambitious enterprise
Develop and uphold a strong workplace culture on The Upshot
Collaborate with colleagues on desks across the newsroom
Support and uphold the value of journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Report to Matthew Ericson, Assistant Managing Editor
Basic Qualifications 10+ years of journalism experience
Strong news judgment
Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and fostering collaboration among reporters, visual journalists, and technologists
Demonstrated expertise in shaping broad journalism and in data-driven journalism
Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of experience as an editor and manager
Experience leading innovations in story forms and using new technologies to tell stories
Experience editing or writing about politics and policy
Expertise in editing charts and information graphics
Experience coaching colleagues to enhance technical and journalistic skills

Compensation The annual base pay range for this role is $200,000 to $250,000 USD.
