Position Definition : Under general direction of the Chief Building Official, this position is accountable as a team member of the Community Development Department to achieve results in support of the City's mission, goals, policies and objectives.

Examples of Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations : The listed tasks are essential for this position and may include, but are not limited to the following :

• Inspecting industrial, commercial and residential buildings during various states of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with applicable local, state and federal regulations.
• Supervising and training personnel.
• Implementing directions from superiors that are provided orally and / or in writing.
• Reporting orally and in writing to superiors regarding safety and health concerns encountered while performing required duties.
• Operating motor vehicle while performing required duties.
• Issuing permits for work to be performed.
• Conferring with architects, contractors, builders and responding to inquiries over the telephone or in person.
• Performing journey-level inspection duties in trade areas.
• Inspecting foundations, cement, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating, and electrical installations.
• Assurance of compliance with State Building and Fire Codes.
• Participating in checking building plans, reviewing plans and specifications.
• Examining grades.
• Inspecting mobile home parks.
• Inspecting new business occupancies in conjunction with issuance of business licenses.
• Participating in the preparation of non-complying cases for prosecution and testifying in court.
• Supervising office operations and personnel liaison to other departments.
• Receiving and solving citizen complaints.
• Delivering outstanding internal and external customer service while solving problems and proactively creating sustainable solutions to issues.
• Conducting duties, responsibilities, tasks and assignments with a constructive, cooperative, positive, professional attitude and demeanor.
• Supporting the City's mission, goals, policies and objectives.

Classification : The position is covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is a member of the Classified Service.

Minimum Qualifications : Knowledge of equipment, regulations, principles, procedures and / or practices necessary to perform required duties; Vehicle Code of the State of California; applicable health and safety regulations; correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation. The position requires computer literacy with knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office; the ability to communicate using email programs; and an understanding of and adherence to City policies for information technology. The position's expected competencies are sound decision-making skills; critical thinking ability; problem solving and innovation skills; drive for results; analytic skills; interpersonal, customer service and diplomatic skills; ethical conduct; and proven top performances. The position requires meeting the physical employment standards for the classification.

Supplemental Information : The selection process may include but is not limited to : Application review and evaluation, written examination, performance test and interview.
