Contract consulting opportunity for a Mainframe Engineer based in the Minneapolis, MN area.

Client requirements :

  • US Citizen or GC holder
  • W2 hourly - no corp to corp (C2C)
  • Hybrid role : onsite 2-3 days / week in the Minneapolis area

Seeking an experienced Mainframe Engineer to join a growing team and support a mission-critical technology product. In this role, you will design, build, maintain, and support mainframe applications while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams. You'll help ensure 24 / 7 system availability, troubleshoot operational issues, and implement long-term solutions that improve stability and performance.

This is a hands-on role for a skilled programmer who thrives in solving complex technical problems and supporting critical systems in a fast-paced, Agile environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain mainframe applications.
  • Collaborate with engineering, infrastructure, product, and security teams to deliver solutions.
  • Gather requirements, perform system analysis, and implement scalable solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical and operational issues, including root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Support 24 / 7 production systems through a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Integrate mainframe systems with modern technologies (e.g., Kafka, APIs).
  • Analyze batch processes and assess impacts of system changes.
  • Document technical solutions, standards, and procedures.
  • Contribute to mainframe decommissioning activities and modernization initiatives.

    • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong programming skills in COBOL .
  • Experience with z / OS , DB2 , and JCL .
  • Knowledge of CICS, VSAM, MQ technologies.
  • Experience integrating mainframe systems with modern technologies.
  • Familiarity with batch process analysis and mainframe decommissioning.
  • Ability to design scalable, secure, and repeatable technical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain Agile concepts to partners.
  • Proven ability to influence and implement technical standards, policies, and procedures.

    • ITR Group offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, and 401(k) for eligible employees. The W2 pay range for this type of role is approximately $55.00 -$80.00 per billable hour. This range is an estimate and not a guarantee of compensation.
