Reporting to the VC-CFO, Information Technology Services (ITS) delivers Enterprise information technology services to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the leadership of the campus Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the Director of Security Operations is a leader in the Office of Information Assurance (OIA) responsible for direct oversight of two key strategic areas : Security Operations and Identity and Access Management. Security operations consists of four teams, incident response / threat detection, security engineering & services, Active Directory architecture / management and Identity Management, which is responsible for a variety of access management functions, as well as campus single-sign on, MFA, and IAM architecture / design. In addition the Director of Security Operations will assist the CISO with strategy and planning, drive the information security multi-year roadmap, maintain an overall security program - developing and maintaining a team calendar to assist the team in adhering to scheduled deadlines and periodic reporting requirements, and contribute to project management and communications.

In partnership with the CISO this position will help set the vision for the broader information security program, and will have a significant and meaningful impact on supporting the mission of a world-class research institution. The Director of Security Operations works closely with the CISO to foster a strong team and collaborative working environment within Security Operations, and with OIA Risk Management and other ITS teams.

Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet IT compliance, privacy and security goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies.

The Director of Security Operations serves as a backup for the CISO in the case of any CISO absence with appropriate ITS Senior Management Team oversight, facilitating smooth transition for control for IT Services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Advanced degree preferred.

Minimum 2-4 years of experience leading a team or IT organization.

Broad knowledge of information technology security functional areas and as it relates to student data; health information; research subjects; finance; including credit card and loan transactions; management of IT resources and applications; and general computer use practices.

Demonstrated advanced experience working in information security in a higher education environment.

Demonstrated understanding of privacy and security regulations and best practices, including federal and state laws, policies and standards, as well as extensive knowledge about a wide range of privacy / security regulations relevant to higher education and / or medical center and patient information.

Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans in alignment with institutional goals.

Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience supervising technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications :

• CISSP or GIAC specializations or similar certifications

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

Must be able to obtain secret level security clearance.

For emergency situations, must be available 24 / 7.

Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Employee must be available to travel as required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $132,600 - $259,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $63.51 - $124.43

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
