The role involves a variety of duties related to the safety and security of detainees in the Buncombe County Detention Facility. Essential functions include admitting detainees, conducting searches and processing them, advising detainees of facility rules, conducting supervision rounds, inspecting cells, coordinating weekly visits, documenting detainee movement, and supervising detainees during medical administration. The position also requires maintaining various forms and records, and performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience : High School diploma or equivalent, 21 years of age, and certification as a detention officer within a year. A valid driver's license is also required.
The work schedule includes adherence to the Sheriff's Office and County attendance policies, with the facility operating 24 / 7, requiring ability to work various shifts including night shifts. The typical shift is 12 hours with a compensated lunch break.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Knowledge of detainee management practices, local laws, and ability to maintain discipline, accurate records, and courteous relationships with various stakeholders. Ability to take prompt action during emergencies.
