We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Onsite Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our team and provide critical support for our data center projects. In this role, you will be the primary mechanical technical resource, ensuring the quality, compliance, and successful commissioning of all mechanical systems. This position requires a strong background in data center design and construction, as well as a keen eye for detail and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.

Responsibilities

  • Project Collaboration and Design :
  • Work with core teams to develop data center designs from Basis of Design (BOD) through Issued for Construction (IFC).
  • Manage mechanical system issues throughout the entire project lifecycle, from design to installation.
  • Generate scopes of work for major infrastructure upgrades and update system configurations as they evolve.
  • Provide technical guidance to vendors, including reviewing RFIs and submittals.
  • Review change orders for technical content.
  • Attend weekly meetings with Data Center Mechanical and Electrical Engineers
  • Submittal / RFI Reviews :
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of subcontractor and vendor submittals, including temporary provisions (e.g., temp power, cooling, load banking, flush and fill), proposed substitution requests, flushing plans, and returned submittals with EOR comments. Ensure all expected submittals are received and reviewed for compliance.
  • Commissioning & Quality Assurance (QA / QC) :
  • Actively participate in commissioning meetings, demonstrating a thorough understanding of P&IDs, single-line diagrams, sequence of operations, commissioning scripts, and operational considerations to prevent conflicts.
  • Review installations for compliance with contract documents, submittals, and product installation instructions. Support QA / QC teams in issue resolution and correction, including punch list items requiring engineering judgment.
  • Provide observation and support for non-critical system checks. Review relevant test reports (SCCAF, Test and Balance, NETA, HVAC, hydronic pressure tests) for non-conforming data and assist with troubleshooting commissioning issues.
  • Review Method of Procedures (MOPS) for various warranty work, commissioning tasks and equipment start-up to ensure the procedures are safe and reliability is maintained.
  • Provide input to subcontractors and vendors to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of submittals, temporary provisions, flushing plans, and substitution requests.
  • Conduct on-site reviews of FOAK installations to ensure compliance with site requirements and operational staff expectations, setting standards for future installations.
  • Participate in ACC issue review and resolution, documenting field issues and tracking solutions.
  • Review relevant test reports (e.g., Test and Balance) for non-conforming data and assist with troubleshooting.
  • Mechanical Focus Areas :
  • Be a mechanical technical resource for Owner’s local Project Managers, installing contractors, mechanical vendors, and QA / QC providers for issue resolution.
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting, identify repair plans, and participate in critical commissioning of mechanical equipment such as the process water systems, critical cooling air handlers, fuel oil systems and any first of a kind (FOAK) equipment (e.g., process water systems, fuel oil systems, cooling air handlers).
  • Review preliminary and final TAB reports to verify system performance.
  • Verify device installation matches approved coordination during field walks. Identify equipment and valve access or operation conflicts with other trades.
  • Review all fuel deliveries bills of lading (BOL) and fuel testing results prior to introduction into the generator fuel system to ensure it meets Owner’s specifications.
  • Provide field review of mechanical and ductwork protection plans to ensure proper execution.
  • Review ductwork pressure testing results to verify compliance with drawings and specifications.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification s

  • Proven experience as an Owner's Representative Project Manager with a strong mechanical background.
  • In-depth knowledge of P&IDs, single-line diagrams, sequence of operations, and commissioning processes.
  • 10+ years of mechanical field or service experience or journeyman level with applicable systems exposure
  • Extensive knowledge of data center and mission-critical designs and construction processes.
  • Experience with submittal and RFI review processes.
  • Familiarity with construction management tools like ACC.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including process water, critical cooling, and fuel oil systems.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, including GCs, subcontractors, vendors, and engineers.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and controls schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience in bidding, designing, building, operating, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Expertise in mechanical construction and the processes required for proper installation.
  • Strong skills in requirements gathering, resource organization, task prioritization, and scheduling.
  • Excellent attitude and communication skills for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
