Job Summary

The EOIS business unit within Leonardo DRS develops and manufactures the Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) Tactical Agile Gimbal (STAGTM) line of stabilized gimbal products. These STAG systems can be deployed on airborne platforms, on ground / surface (UGV, USV) platforms, or in fixed installations. The Systems Engineering Director is responsible for overall technical leadership of gimbal prototype and product development activities. In this role, you will work closely with customers, engineering leadership and Line-of-Business (LOB) leadership to define requirements, determine priorities, and oversee detailed gimbal design, integration, and test. You will provide guidance and direction to gimbal Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Optical, Software, Firmware, Controls, and Test engineering teams. A strong background in Electro-Optical / Infrared (EOIR) Systems Engineering and experience with development and test of stabilized gimbal systems are required.

Plan, manage, and direct implementation of prototype and product development activities in the EOIS Gimbal Portfolio. Coordinate the creation, development, design, and improvement of products in conformance with established programs and objectives. Provide engineering advice and assistance to other departments as required.

Job Responsibilities

Provide overall technical leadership of gimbal prototype and product development activities

Work with customers, business development, and portfolio management to develop and manage product requirements and to make system architecture and design decisions

Serve as an expert in assigned technical area, both internally and to represent the company externally

Provide input to a portion or all of the technical design of a product(s) or system(s)

Adhere to customer specifications and requirements, and develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable

Guide designs involving interdisciplinary teams in close cooperation with senior engineering management, program management and / or product line management.

May manage others; not a general engineering function, such as software, electrical engineering, etc.

Works closely with project management team to provide budget, cost, and schedule input for design assignments; support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements

Analyze designs as necessary, and document component and subsystem specifications and material requirements

May specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems, and services

Communicate clearly (written and oral) with manufacturing, supply chain, program management and the customer asrequired

Participates extensively in preparation of the more complex and significant proposals

Provide technical expertise, mentoring, coaching, and assistance to other engineers and support personnel

Interact with technical management, other professionals, technicians, and support personnel to coordinate, recommend, and confer regarding technical activities and progress

Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization

Desired Skills

Familiarity with controls systems design, analysis, and performance

Familiarity with Global Positioning System (GPS) and inertial navigation system (INS) technologies and performance

Familiarity with general far target location (FTL) techniques and performance

Familiarity with sensor and laser range performance analyses

Familiarity with calibration, alignment, and test of EO / IR systems

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related technical field with a minimum of 10 years of experience

Experience leading product development teams

Electro-Optical / Infrared (EO / IR) Systems Engineering technical subject matter expertise, including in areas of infrared sensors (LWIR, MWIR, SWIR, NIR), visible sensors, lasers (LRFs, designators, illuminators, pointers), and optics

Experience with development and test of stabilized gimbal systems for deployment in airborne, ground, and maritime environments

Experience transitioning systems into production

Must be a US citizen

Must currently possess or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
