Position Summary
The Communications Manager plays a critical role in driving the organization’s voice, visibility, and influence across platforms. This position will support and lead strategic communications efforts that advance organizational, policy, advocacy, and programmatic goals. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, strong writer, and storyteller who understands the power of narrative to shape public will, influence decision-makers, and build movements. You’ll collaborate across teams to develop messaging, shape public campaigns, and ensure alignment in how we engage stakeholders—from grassroots partners to national media outlets.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Communications & Messaging
Champion the Housing& brand through strategic messaging and storytelling that communicates our identity as more than a housing organization — but one that recognizes housing as the foundation for health, education, and economic mobility
Ensure consistency across all platforms and materials to reinforce our cross-sector relevance and regional leadershipDevelop and implement communications strategies that support external communications, policy, advocacy, and programmatic campaignsCraft messaging that bridges technical content and compelling storytelling for multiple audiencesSupport rapid response and proactive media strategies to elevate our voice in local and national housing conversationsContent DevelopmentDraft and edit a variety of content including policy explainers, press releases, op-eds, talking points, newsletters, social media, and web content
Translate complex housing and economic data into accessible, equity-centered narrativesLead or support the production of thought leadership content, reports, and event materialsDraft scripts and talking points for special events and programs, ensuring alignment with organizational voice and goalsCollaborate with leadership on the development of grant proposals and preparation of funder reports with writing, editing, and gathering content from across the organizationMedia Relations & Public EngagementCultivate relationships with reporters, editors, and influencers in housing, policy, and community development
Manage media outreach, monitor coverage, and maintain press listsSupport development of op-eds and letters to the editor from staff and partnersDigital & Brand OversightManage and grow our presence across digital platforms (website, social media, email) with a strong, consistent brand voice
Create or coordinate multimedia content (graphics, videos, audiograms) in collaboration with designers and vendorsMonitor analytics and adjust strategies for engagement and impactInternal & Stakeholder CommunicationsCoordinate communications with members, coalitions, funders, and elected officials
Support cross-functional initiatives to align internal messaging and external campaignsPrepare leadership and staff for speaking engagements, public testimony, and media interviewsServe as the staff lead for the Communications Affinity Group, facilitating regular engagement among members working in marketing and communications roles across the community development sector, and supporting peer learning, resource-sharing, and collaborationQualifications
4–6 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, or public affairs (nonprofit or advocacy experience strongly preferred)Demonstrated success translating policy and programmatic work into compelling contentExcellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a strong grasp of voice, tone, and framingDeep understanding of racial, housing, and economic justice narrativesFamiliarity with affordable housing, community development, and / or systems change workProficiency in social media strategy, email platforms (e.g., Constant Contact), CMS (e.g., WordPress), and CRM (e.g. Salesforce) toolsExperience with Canva, Adobe Suite, or other design / video tools a plusStrong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across diverse teams and partnersSelf-starter with attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects, and a commitment to impactCompensation & Benefits
Salary Range : $55,000 - $70,000Housing& has a robust benefits package that includes employer-funded healthcare, life insurance, retirement, and vacation.
