Position Summary

The Swing Shelter Coordinator plays a key leadership role in overseeing the swing shift team to ensure smooth, safe, and effective shelter operations. Serving as the primary on-site leader

during swing hours, this position provides direction, problem-solving, and support to staff while modeling trauma-informed and equity-centered practices.

The Coordinator ensures staff are well-trained, engaged, and supported in providing consistent, high-quality services to residents. This role also helps streamline processes, maintain staffing coverage, and identify improvements that strengthen team performance and shelter efficiency.

Essential Job functions

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and support swing shift advocates and any other staff working swing hours, providing direction, feedback, and coaching.
  • Serve as the on-site decision maker during swing hours, managing emergencies, safety concerns, and operational issues.
  • Maintain schedules, process time-off requests, and ensure adequate staffing and workload balance for swing staff.
  • Facilitate shift-change meetings to promote communication, consistency, and team connection.
  • Participate in YWCA Utahs ongoing racial and gender equity initiatives and workgroups.
  • Training & Development

  • Support onboarding, continued training, and skill development for swing shift advocates.
  • Collaborate with advocates to identify training needs and promote accessible learning experiences.
  • Partner with the People & Culture team to track training completion and coordinate coverage during training periods.
  • Develop and maintain a master training schedule for new shelter advocates.
  • Ensure all team members complete required trainings, including :
  • Relias courses (first 7 and 30 days)

  • 40-Hour Advocacy Training (UDVC, UCASA, UOVC)
  • Sanctuary Model and other organizational trainings
  • Administration & Operations

  • Oversee compliance and auditing processes related to swing shift operations.
  • Manage shift coverage during absences, training, or emergencies, including filling in when necessary.
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate updates to the Assistant Director and leadership team.

  • If driving on business, a valid Utah drivers license, access to an automobile, and valid auto insurance required.

  • Physical / Sensory Demands

    Work is generally performed in a safe office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to : sit for long periods of time; use computer to enter data; use telephone to converse with customers and employees; walk and stand for long periods of time; perform repetitive wrist, hand and / or finger movement. Travel to attend conferences, training, outreach and other events occurs routinely. Rarely required to lift up to 30 lbs.
