Contracted Conflict Attorney

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is currently searching for a dedicated and experienced Conflict Attorney who will be responsible for delivering legal services through the Client’s Band Member Legal Services Office. This role is crucial for ensuring that Mille Lacs Band Members receive the legal representation they need.

Judicial Districts covering Mille Lacs, Morrison, Aitkin, Crow Wing, Kanabec, Pine, and Sherburne Counties. The range of legal services provided will include family law matters such as divorce, custody disputes, third-party custody, guardianship, child support, domestic violence cases, and child protection issues, as well as matters related to the Indian Child Welfare Act, housing law, estate planning, probate, and consumer issues.

The attorney will be tasked with effectively managing a caseload that includes about one-third of the conflict cases assigned to them. Key responsibilities involve, but are not limited to, attending court hearings either in person or virtually, thorough preparation and monitoring of cases, providing legal advice, and maintaining clear communication with Band Member clients. It will also involve determining and executing a litigation strategy that best protects the interests of Mille Lacs Band Members and their children.

Native American candidates are highly encouraged to submit applications for this position. Qualified applicants must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and hold a valid license to practice law in Minnesota, with a willingness to obtain certification in the Court of Central Jurisdiction. Ideally, candidates will have 3-5 years of experience in civil litigation and a current Minnesota Driver’s License.
