The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, as part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR), supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Our mission is to provide and coordinate programs and services that minimize safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks in a manner consistent with fiscal and environmental stewardship. We are comprised of 9 technical groups with more than 50 specialists who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The Stanford University Fire Marshal's Office (SUFMO) is part of Stanford University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and provides comprehensive services to the Stanford community encompassing all aspects of Fire Safety. All SUFMO staff are dedicated to supporting the academic, research, clinical and public service missions of the University. By providing fire protection / safety engineering, education, maintenance, and prevention & inspection services, we allow the Stanford community to pursue their goals in a safe environment.
In This Role, You Will
- Examine, review, and comment on plans to ensure compliance with the applicable fire, building, and any other applicable technical codes, standards, laws and regulations, and for life safety issues, especially those that involve fire protection systems, access, egress, general storage, special occupancies and hazards, and the storage and use of hazardous materials.
- Evaluate fire protection systems to ensure coordination into a comprehensive fire and life safety strategy.
- Consult with other staff, EH&S staff, project managers, construction personnel, and governmental agency staff to ensure fire and life safety systems are appropriately installed and functional.
- Prepare fire hazard analyses, including lowest explosive level (LEL) calculations, and reports required by the California Building Code.
- Negotiate with regulatory agencies as appropriate to arrive at a reasonable accommodation of the code.
Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience : Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent focused on fire protection engineering or a closely related field, and three years of experience examining and reviewing plans related to building construction, fire protection systems, and the storage and use of hazardous materials; or equivalent combination of education and experience.To be successful in this role, you need to bring :Knowledge of fire protection engineering principles and their application.Knowledge of the most current building fire alarm and automatic fire suppression systems codes.Knowledge of and experience in building construction, fire protection systems, hazardous materials, and plan review.Knowledge of fire prevention principles, fire protection systems, and life safety practices and procedures.Knowledge of codes and regulations related to the use and storage of hazardous materials.Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative internal and external relationships.Proficiency and experience with computers and software; knowledge of office and industry software applications.Physical Requirements
Frequently stand / walk, write by hand and use a telephone.Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach / work above shoulder, twist / bend / stoop / squat, grasp lightly / fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort and file paperwork or parts, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds or more.Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.Auditory acuity with ability to hear horns and bells.Visual acuity with ability to see strobe lights.Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of the job.Working Conditions

The expected pay range for this position is $133,082 to $153,184 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate including but not limited to geographic location, knowledge, skills and abilities, relevant education, depth and breadth of experience, performance; as well as other business and organization needs such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the minimum qualifications, departmental budget availability, and market and internal equity across the unit, department and reporting relationships.
