Must-Have :
Comfortability to take MedSurg assignments
Previous experience with the mentioned patient types including IMC / stepdown and neuro
Ability to read and interpret cardiac strips
Wound care experience
Line management and drain / tube management
Comfort with drip titration of medications such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasionally esmolol
Description :
Beds : 36-48 (flex with semi-private rooms as needed)
Patient Types :
Mixed unit covering a range from Med / Surg to IMC level care.
Care includes both long-length stay patients and patients of varying acuity levels.
Common diagnoses include DKA requiring insulin drips, pre / post-surgical patients, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, gastrointestinal disorders, infections, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, and DVTs.
CVA overflow may also be encountered.
The unit administers a variety of oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, including titratable vasoactive drips, TPN / tube feeding, and blood product transfusions.
Management involves peripheral IV, midline, PICC and central line access, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, drains, and urinary and fecal collection devices.
Preventative and restorative skin and wound care is provided.
Telemetry monitoring is conducted with nurses reading and interpreting cardiac rhythms.
Patient Ratios :
Long length of stay (MedSurg / NO Tele) : 1 nurse to 5-6 patients.
Med Surg / Telemetry (no IMC drips) : 1 nurse to 5 patients.
Intermediate Care : 1 nurse to 4 patients.
Support on the Unit :
CNA presence is available with a ratio of 1 : 8.
Charge nurse does not take a patient load.
Phlebotomy services are available.
Respiratory Therapy is available.
Hospitalist is present on the unit.
Charting System / Equipment :
EPIC system is required for charting.
Omnicell and Alaris systems are used for medication management.
Floating :
Travel nurses may float to any adult inpatient unit, including Med Surg, Ortho / Neuro / Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation.
Floating is based on the scope of practice and will rotate with other travelers.
Scheduling :
6-week schedules will be created.
Weekend rotation may require travelers to work up to 4 out of the 6 weekends, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Travelers may be scheduled for weekend shifts depending on staffing needs.
Holiday Expectations :
Holidays will not accept requests for time off.
Requests for time off can be submitted to management for approval around winter holidays.
Blackout dates for time off are established due to specific events.
