About Us

10-4 Engineering PLLC is a Chicago-based firm founded by three experienced structural engineers : Hemal Patel, Gary Powell, and Vinod Patel. Together, they bring more than 100 years of combined experience delivering transportation projects that keep communities connected throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, and the Midwest.

The name 10-4 Engineering comes from the familiar phrase “10-4,” meaning “message received, taking action.” That straightforward mindset guides how we communicate, solve problems, and deliver projects that meet our clients’ goals.

While our foundation is in bridge and structural design, we are expanding to provide complete and well-rounded transportation services. We are looking to earn IDOT roadway prequals, start a roadway group and build a complete interdisciplinary team that can deliver great projects across the state. Currently, we have a strong backlog on the roadway side. This is an incredible opportunity for a roadway PE looking to grow.

About the Job

This is more than a standard design role. We are looking for a licensed Roadway Engineer with 7-15 years of experience who wants to help build and grow our roadway practice. You will have the chance to shape how we deliver roadway projects and play a key role in how our firm grows as a trusted transportation partner for public agencies and private clients.

In this role, you will lead roadway design work from early planning and studies through detailed design, final plans, and construction support. You will work directly with our founders and experienced structural team while coordinating with geotechnical, drainage, and construction specialists to deliver high-quality, well-integrated solutions. What You Will Do

  • Lead development of roadway designs, horizontal & vertical alignments, profiles, sections, details, etc.
  • Create geometric layouts for highways, roads, and interchanges that meet standards and client needs.
  • Prepare final plans, cost estimates, quantities, and specifications for bidding and construction.
  • Coordinate with structural, geotechnical, drainage, and traffic disciplines as needed.
  • Support permitting processes and contribute to feasibility studies, reports, and project documentation.
  • Help project managers with scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and ensuring quality deliverables.
  • Communicate with clients, agency contacts, and other stakeholders to streamline project delivery.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help shape a roadway team that works together and delivers great results.

What We Are Looking For

  • Based in the Chicago area or willing to relocate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Must hold a PE license in Illinois. This is required, no exceptions. You must already have the license.
  • At least seven (7) years of progressive roadway design experience, ideally with IDOT or Tollway projects.
  • Prior experience and close familiarity with IDOT and Illinois Tollway design manuals and standards.
  • Strong and hands-on experience with Microstation and OpenRoads Designer on design projects.
  • Experience preparing full plan sets, specifications, and cost estimates for bidding and construction.
  • Clear, confident communicator who can present ideas and coordinate with clients.
  • Organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects at once.
  • Care about mentoring others and being part of a small firm where your ideas and contributions matter.
